Hi Fiend,

Is the Peace and Justice Center still in operation? I am the publicity Chairman for an event called "PeaceFest '08" which will be a global peace gathering in SL next August. We are still working out venues, etc. I would love to talk to your Dad and find out if he is interested in being a part of it.
Do you mind passing this message on to him?
I really appreciate it!
KK

"My work is the delivery of awareness of the cost that civilians pay in the midst of political violence. It is a truth most keep deep in denial. I hope to awaken compassion".

Thanks. Hope to see you in SL.

I think it's tremendously important to get peace and human rights movements from RL working with SL to see if they can get any traction. I think it's a great public service to bring forth into SL, a place of indifferent gamers and the passively entertained, some of these kinds of pictures and stories that are so shocking, and which are pushed away and not covered by mainstream media in RL. SL also can be a place where likeminded people can get together to work on these issues. Iraq has all but been forgotten except by only a handful of groups; activity on it at the national and international level is basically paralyzed for all kinds of reasons. So any effort to raise awareness or to just seek out connections with people at the grassroots level and keep a connection is to be praised.

Having said that, I will also voice my criticism of these types of activities. Sept. 11 didn't happen because school kids in America didn't know their counterparts in Iraq or Iran. It didn't happen because Americans are backward and uninformed about foreign culture and languages and beligerent in their foreign policy. It happened for far more complex reasons, that have just as much to do with murderous cults that send young men to their deaths in hijacked airplanes as it does the "evils of America." Therefore to tackle the issues in any kind of facile, one-sided "blame America" way is not going to get you broader support. People just have too much information to be snowed nowadays by the hard left with its tropism for "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" which it has held since the 1920s.

The murder and mayhem in Iraq is on America's conscience, but it's because they chose to fight something that is more murderous and ruthless in its belief system. That was a bad call, and we shouldn't be there, and we should get out. That doesn't mitigate the realities of Sadam or Hezbollah and other terrorists, however.

I wish this round of the peace movement would shed some of the fellow-traveling and idiocy of yesteryear and have as sturdy and brisk an attitude toward Islamist totalitarianism as it has toward America's dismantling and violence to its own Constitution and international law. It should serve as a conscience not only to the comfortable North and West but to the discomfiting East and South.

I'm really looking forward to hearing whether PT Witte finds that SL really adds anything to his work. So much of peace work is virtual anyway, maybe SL is a natural. My own view is that SL could be used only very slow, despite its revolutionary and accelerated growth, to change people and their relationships internally, not externally in some facile, mass way. SL should be able to undo some of the damage of mass communications in spreading abusive ideologies.
