I think it is a big mistake from Linden Labs to make the step of adding audio to the RP game Second Life. I basically devide the player of SL into 3 types.

The first type is the Single Life Player. He uses the SL mainly for extension of his RL. They mix RL and SL issue freely and there is actually not much roleplaying going on with these people. This makes them the biggest danger for SL and RL. Because they tend to spill arguments, etc. from SL into RL and try to enforce RL laws into SL,
mistakenly trying to diminish the freedom in SL for other type player, because they themselves can not or do not want to differentiate SL from RL.

The second type is the double life player. This is the real roleplaying type, who understands the meaning of RP. All matters and issues in SL are kept seperated from the matters and issues in RL. This seperation allows for a totally different set of rules for both worlds. The base intention of roleplaying games and in my view also the main idea for building SL. Double life players would prefer and environment without single life players, because single life player do not always understand or accept the seperation made by the real roleplayer and just label it as secracy. This makes interaction between single and double life players clash.

To overcome all of this, the real roleplayer of the double life type, turn into triple life player, which is the third type of players. These players pretend to be a single life player, but actually are not. So, they have a SL and a fake RL (I call PL for pseudo-life) beside their actually RL. These type of players are capable to interact well with single life as well as double life players and florish very well on the grid of SL. They present no danger at all for RL or SL, because the triple life player is certainly capable to maintain seperation between 2 lifes, doing actually 3 instead.

However, the second and third types are the people we should have in a roleplaying facility. The first type should be banned, because they will diminsh the integrity of the grid and reconnect the virtual world back with the real world, which reduces it to a plain communication tool, removing all the charme it had. The act of Linden Labs to add audio to the SL, add another connection between SL and RL to actually promote the single life player type and maybe makes life not much more difficult for double life players, cause they just turn it off. The triple life players are in big danger to loose the capability to hold up a PL (pseudo-life) so they can interact with all single and double life players.

My conclusion is that the degrading of SL is started already and soon it will be a regular communication tool, while roleplaying will and have to move somewhere else. A shame we can not keep something pure in the real world…
