My pleasure, Ms Murphy.

As a recreational user myself I can tell you that the old slogan still goes. Your world, your imagination. It's just a lot easier and prettier now, thanks to the work of those who came before us.

Wouldn't it be great if the pictures in the old entries could be made visible again? A simple overview of Post 6 could be the starting point of a social and design history of SL.

I wonder if any of the models had that in mind when they took off their clothes in front of the camera.

@levity: well, hello there. its really nice of you to actually look into this little bit of sl history.
that divide you refer to. yes, i think that the divide was smaller back then. in fact, it seems to me that, in 03 and into 04 a huge majority of people in sl were there to create something. a person might land in sl as a vagabond, but within weeks they had a business or creative interest of some kind or they were gone. ha ha. oh i tell you. some of the business wars that i caused/suffered thru/participated in. the prim wars. taxes. it was truly survival of the fittest. everyone was angling for some niche. one song and i had this riotous business war going on that was hugely entertaining. griefers would strike and then drop by to discuss what i thought about it. in some ways it was the wild west, and in a population of 500. 5 or 6 people were the fashion creators of note, many others wanting to get noticed.. black tie events attended by what would later come to be called that thing prokovky coined. it was buggy and it was lagged and i think everyone had a very interesting time. big john and cristiano. cats paw. the sunshine sisters. jellin. the first ever centerfold in all of sl history was jova song. that was really a great time. characters galore. i learned a lot about myself in sl.

@ Lila

There's no excuse for the rudeness of some of the comments. That's the downside of pseudonimity, I guess. The Herald ran an article about that just a few days back.

Reading back your entry it's clear that you were prepared for the flamers. So why go along for the ride anyway? Seriously, I'd like to know.

***

Another thing I've been wondering about. Most of the Herald articles seem to be about the technical and political sides of SL. From where I'm looking, the editors and some of the regulars contributors are pretty high up the SL tree.

Then there's some satirical stuff (love you, Pappy) and finally there's Post 6. It's been there for a long time, as I just found out, but it seems mostly separate from the rest of the Herald: models seem to be selected from a very different crowd and even the commentators seem to be a separate lot.

I'm guessing, adn perhaps the archives will confirm this, that in the past this divide wasn't there or that it was smaller. If that's true, where did the diversion start, and why, and is it a bad thing?

With all the flamers waiting to dig their claws in, I'm just hoping that models are properly prepared for a cold shower. Posing in the pixel nude is one thing, but an honest write-up is where you're really exposed.

I gotta say,it kinda sucks being lumped into the category of someone who only cares about making their avatar being pretty, being "sexy" and having no character simply because I did a Post 6. I mean if you think I'm lame & bland, fine... but label me on my own merits, guys! The feedback to mine from two weeks was generally positive, and (coincidence?) I noticed there weren't as many comments.

Even though I'm involved in projects here and there in SL I'm a complete "nobody", have no connections to anybody- and I got picked in a snap. My avatar isn't a Barbie and I like to think I'm not entirely generic. You can so easily talk to female friend that you think is brilliant, see if she wants in and contact Timothy in-world- if he finds her interesting he *will* be in touch. He's insanely busy and not in SL very often, so he's pretty limited in his exposure if people don't help him out a bit.

When some commentators just hop on for an unending barrage of lazy insults while making sweeping generalizations they're devaluing their own input. Some good ideas here- if some of the really disappointed people here put 5 minutes into "nominating" an impressive woman to Timothy in an IM in SL than- ta da! The beginning of having to be clever when you only have positive things to say. I can't wait!

(P.S. I am in love with the face on this avatar. :)

@ Diane
Thanks for the tip. I read some of the stories and I'll be reading many more.

@ marilyn
It looks like you did a little more than make suggestions about editing write-ups.

I finally did what I should have done before and hit the Herald archives. The first Post 6 was published in December 2004 in cooperation with Marilyn Murphy's Player Magazine. With a reference to emulating the British tabloids, the publisher's introduction seems to be rather tongue-in-cheeck. Models apparently featured in both publications.

The first couple of model's write-ups are a lot shorter than the ones we're seeing now. Fairly similar in content, except that several of the models in the first few months are involved in building and setting up businesses. A reflection of the time perhaps? December 2004 is way before the 2007 hype drew in a more recreational group of users (myself included).

Is it my romantic notion of an era that I have missed out on, or do the old posts really have more of a feeling of going boldly where no man has gone before?

It's just a pity that the pictures are missing from the old entries.

If anyone wants to do some archive browsing of their own, here's where to start: http://alphavilleherald.com/2004/12/introducing_her.html

An eyewitness report of an early photography session is here: http://alphavilleherald.com/2005/03/off_the_grid_wi_2.html

@bored>>> Man... there is finally a voice out there in the wilderness that understands. Your points and mine totally coincide on this. How the F*#k is it an accomplishment to buy some crap and play dressy bessie and expect the rest of us to give a shit. PLease give me a break.... this post 6 crap is beyond feeble. This broad is one of many vapid losers that seem to populate SL. Blingtard alert ! Blingtard alert! Clean up on aisle three.

@ Levity & Scylla

You may want to check this out: http://twothreesixfive.wordpress.com/

It's a project that over the course of one year (threesixfive days) has people writing a short piece about their day in first and second life. Different person each day, and so far a lot of very different stories.

There are still some dates to fill and you don't need to pose in the nude.
