I got my first furry avatar in 2008 because I got tired of trying to make a decent-looking human one (if you agree with anything I say, at least let it be that SL’s human avatars nauseate anyone with any knowledge of anatomy). You even admitted yourself that there’s only a “chance” that I’m a furry if I wear a furry avatar, so I’m not sure where you’re going with this.

In any case, at the time I didn’t even know anything about the “fandom”. I thought it was just some cute little avatar option, much like choosing your race in WoW. Although I haven’t played that since high school (in which I got bored around level 12 and quit) you wouldn’t assume that a person parades around demanding “orc rights” and faps to orcish porn just because they chose an orc as their character. Although I could see that happening with blood elves…

@ Dubbleyew: No, not really. Having an anthro animal avatar in Second Life is indeed a clue that someone might be a furry but theres plenty of people who have a furry avatar (often because they find them cute) and dont have a clue what furry is beside the SL avatars. You mentioned people who didnt want to be associated with the furry fandom but still have an affinity for anthropomorphic animal characters.
This discussion of when people deserve the label ‘furry’ has been going on for years among members of the fandom, and even longer what should be called furry. For instance many Disney movies have anthro animals in it but that doesnt really make them furry movies.

In short if Nelson doesnt concider himself a furry then he isnt a furry no matter what kind of avatar he has. Just like wearing a star trek uniform doesnt automatically makes one a trekkie.

In my opinion Nelson, the only thing that makes you a furry is having a furry character/avatar to represent yourself (or “fursona”)…you don’t have to be into the porn or have a persecution complex. Being a troll doesn’t make you a not-furry, either.

There’s a lot of furries who don’t want to be associated with the fandom, I honestly don’t blame them sometimes. But if you walk around SL as a furry character, and use one to represent yourself in avatars and whatnot, then chances are you’re a furry.

There isn’t anything wrong with it, I for one don’t have a single human avatar. (that I actually use) I just find it funny how often people who are very obviously furries keep trying to deny being furries.
