Just the other day Clickable Culture reported on Cory Linden flogging the line again about open source, tempting listeners with the idea that very soon everybody will be able to “host their own sim” or at least “roll their own.”

Citing Reuters, CC quoted Jim Purbrick as saying, “”In one or two years time, you’ll be able to download the Second Life source code and build a plugin for (Web browser) Firefox.”

“It looks like hosting your own Second Life server will be possible in 2007 or 2008,” figures Tony Walsh.
But that’s just what they say to outworlders.

Inworld, now comes the transcript of the Concierge Town Hall, and here’s what Joe Linden says:

[15:24] Rraven Moonlight: when will we as Sim owners be able to host our own sims locally on our own gear via remote access to the main grid?
[15:25] Joe Linden: we have no timeline for that capability.

Feature proposal: coordinate inworld and outworld PR statements!
