Alts ‘R Us

Dear_001
Dear Leader, poised to call in an army of alts from the cold for $9.95 a pop.

By Alty McAlty, Dept. of Replication

Hate that artificial ceiling of only “five per family” that Linden Lab has always kept on the alt account?

Annoyed that grief-happy kiddies get to make up a zillion accounts one after another as they get banned, while you who give a credit card and your real-life name keep getting told to stop when you need alts for business or non-profit work?

See a really cool last name coming up that you absolutely have to have — including your own RL last name that you’d like to get without paying $150 US to own it and a fee to LL ever after?

Your troubles are over. Read how after the jump…

Hat-tip to Something Something for telling me something I knew, from experimenting repeatedly, and again after Clickable Culture brought this to light, but didn’t know was now set in Linden stone in the Knowledge Base which of course nobody ever reads:

“Currently, you can create as many additional Basic or Premium accounts as you want to pay for. Previously, we limited accounts to 5 per household and 2 per payment method, but this is no longer the case.” The post date is 10/30/06 so this is a new development. The cost is $9.95 a pop. I’m there!

One of the nasty back-bites on this one, however, is if you have made up a slew of alts without verification just because you could, if you don’t pay for them now, LL will close the account if they find out about it and force you to pay to re-open it. Content-creators and land-group members beware.

Eesh, I know some people who are going to have to pay $100 US or so if they want to bring into Second Life the entire U.S. Supreme Court in virtual, which they whipped up with a friend or two one night and then forgot all their fake emails and passwords.

“What are the consequences of creating or using illegitimate alts?

When we find people with accounts that have not been paid for and are in violation of our policies, we may, at our discretion and in alignment with our Terms of Service, take any or all of the following actions: a) prevent them from creating additional accounts, b) close some or all of their accounts until payment is made, or c) close all of their accounts permanently.”
