Herald to Embed Raving Reporter in Philcon 2006

Crusading SL journalists might help metaverse and RL – or not.

This coming weekend, the Philadelphia Science Fiction and Fantasy Society will feature Second Life in a dozen panel discussions and multiple interactive sessions. To help maintain the cosmic order and appropriate levels of discourse between avatars populating the metaverse and meatspace typists stuck in RL, the Herald will embed Budka Groshomme, from our Science Fiction desk in at least four of these mixed reality sessions, and may also dispatch Urizenus Sklar to the virtual scene as well – should that become necessary.

For those unfamiliar with Philcon, this might seem a bit of an over-reaction, but Philcon is the largest SF convention on the east coast and usually gets a couple thousand attendees. The virtual worlds track is just one of many tracks the convention programming carries – about fifty SF and Fantasy writers will be doing readings, sitting on panels, and meeting with the fans. Some of them are already in SL as members of the SFWA group. The Second Life sessions will be held at the SF Geeks Museum in Indigo and then move to Chaos later. Forewarned is forearmed – Linden Lab’s software may also supply a bit of chaos itself if the past several months are any guide – so hope for the best and mind those hiccuping garbage collectors and tricky sim crossings.
