Today, Herald editrix and professional yacht racer Pixeleen Mistral announced sponsorship of a series of Second Life sailboat races this month – the ‘Fairly Unbalanced Cup Kompetition – Offshore Fun and Frolic’[editor: can we change that? the acronym is unfortunate] also known as the ‘Fairly Unbalanced Cup’.

To kick off this prestigious series, the Electric Sheep Company will provide live video coverage of the races saturday at 7 pm PST in Sanchon sim – courtesy of Electric Sheep camera girl DTV Sheep who will ride along with Ms. Mistral. Live on-the-water coverage of sailboat races has been a feature of the real life yacht racing scene for quite some time – and now races in Second Life can enjoy metaverse television coverage as the event is streamed live to the Electric Sheep web site for web-bound spectators.

Ms. Mistral said the FUC is a way to both honor the Herald’s high editorial standards and motto – always fairly unbalanced – and take part in the grand tradition of newspapers sponsoring sporting events to assure a steady stream of news. The thought that this might also force competing news sources to mention the Herald apparently never crossed anyone’s mind. Sources inside the Herald did speculate that Ms. Mistral really just wanted a date with her new media girlfriend DTV Sheep – so this is not about self-promoting media frenzies – there is also a heartwarming more human side to the story. [editor: get back to copying from the press release, please]

The FUC races are governed by the International Sailing Federation racing rules of sailing and races will be held twice a week for the next three weeks to select champions from the two sponsoring yacht clubs – Vagabonds Yacht Club and Alternate Yacht Club. The club champions will then races in a one-on-one match race series to decide the top sailor. More information is available at the Second Life Sailing Federation web site: slsailing.org. The web page for the streaming video of the event is http://dtv.sheeplabs.com/.

Is this going to be like Mass for Shut-ins?

BTW, I claim dibs on the term “editrix” which I used first here:

I believe that ‘editrix’ was originally taken by St. Jude at Mondo 2000 (that would be *before* Wired even, or, as we say BW).

Here is a ref to editrix Queen Who at Mondo 2000, dated 1994. Not sure if that’s an authentic date, but that was about the time Mondo 2000 sputtered and died. And I’m thinking the actual name was Queen Mu, but then what of St. Jude? Oh well…

Then there the title is taken up by my old WELL buddy, Tiffany Lee Brown (known on the well as magdalen) on Signum:

Uri, I don’t claim dibs on the word itself, coining it (that would be silly to do given that there must be a million people out there using it who thought of “dominatrix” and “editrix” long before me.

I just claim dibs on using it first at the Herald.

Then why did you stake your claim to first use on Herald via your use of it on Second Thoughts? :-P

Well, if you read Prok’s post, it just mentions when HE first used it.

But geesh, who the hell cares? How silly.

Silly? I prefer to think we are obsessive.

‘Fairly Unbalanced Cup Kompetition – Offshore Fun and Frolic’ an “unfortunate acronym”?

Yeah, and I like how 7UP makes the sores on the inside of my mouth tingle. Pucker up, Buttercup!
