January 17th message of the day will not die

A friend pointed out Sunday that the message of the day on the Second Life web site’s community pages http://secondlife.com/community/ warned of an upgrade coming “on January 17th”. Since then, the Herald staff have watched in wonder as the message of the day continues to live on – despite it’s past-the-sell-by-date overtones. It is now Tuesday morning February 27th and we are starting to feel a bit embarrassed for our friends at the Lab.

Guys? You can probably take that message of the day down now – it definitely has the record for endurance. Or is this a promise that next January you will “upgrade” SL to an older version? I know some people who would say that recent upgrades have not been an improvement – is this is a promise that it will all get better in a downgrade next January?

The MOTD is one of those fascinating Linden cultural artifacts which lurches between the really stupid and obvious, like:

“Press the FLY button on your screen to er…FLY…”

I mean, if you have to use up scarce eyeball real-estate merely to give that message, you’re in trouble, no?

    Or they have things like

“If you wish to cantilever the torical eclipsed primii, slide X 45 degrees for an enhanced reticulated spline.”

They can’t seem to hit that sweet spot in the middle that has useful stuff in ordinary non jargon language.

If you weren’t so negative all the time Prok, you might have seen it for what it is, letting newbies not used to the UI know that there IS a fly button at all.

  3. Is this News?

Is this news? Sounded like a lot of editorial comment in there. It wasn’t marked OpEd.

Well I suppose you COULD say it isn’t news – more like history considering the MOTD’s age.
But there again, no one else seems to have noticed it until now, so it is new information – yeah, I think it’s news.

It’s also a sad comment on the lack of attention to detail expended on one of the main pages of the SL website.

Unless… could Second Life be stuck in a ‘Groundhog Day’ like time warp and we are all condemmed to carry out the same futile actions until… uh… what?

Oh for the love of god…

The reason why that message is still in there because it cycle with more than one messages in a list. LL is running by HUMANS, which we all can make mistakes and forget things.

This isn’t something like a new message said “Go Fuck Your Self” or anything quite like it. You’re just biting yourself in the nuts, clown-tards.

Nacon, I think it’s prety obvious to most folks that this article is tongue-in-cheek and is posted for the fun of the thing. Dude, you really need to de-stress. The only “clown-tard” I see here isn’t the author of the article. Seriously man, get a sense of humor. LOL
