Friend WaldOh Kidnapped!!!

Desperate residents scramble to find ransom money and “black liquorice jelly beans”

by Yo Brewster, concerned citizen

Waldoh

Last Saturday, Friends Fighting Cancer organized a Relay For Life Date Auction which was an amazing success (L$217,316). Unfortunately this amazing event was overshadowed by a dramatic event. At the end of the RFL Date Auction, it was our Friend WaldOh who was going to be auctioned off when suddenly to shady characters jumped on stage and decided to kidnap him. I’m not sure if this was a bunch of griefers or not but before anybody could do anything about it, they were able to make the sim crash and get away with WaldOh. They did leave a note behind with their demands which you can read below:

“This be here a ransom note for yur WaldOh. Thats right people, ur percious waldoh is kidnapped and if you want him back, you best payup! $100,000L You want him back in one piece? listen up, scruvy dogs I want $100,000L Lindens! And I want em in small bills, unmarked, and no funny business . . . or I cut off his arms and tape em to his forehead!

Gimme Lindens, I need Lindens, where o where are my friggen Lindens ppl!!!

I want me money in a black suitcase, and 5 pounds of those black liquorice jelly beans in there too! I’ll tell ya the location later. This is a need to know basis, and all you need to know right now, is start saving your lindens or your waldoh will be like bread dough, baked in a oven! Dont try to come find him, he’s tied up at the moment and wont be seeing visitors, until you payup! I’ll be sending pictures and messages to your admin of ur web page, so dont mess with me avatars!”

Needless to say, many of our members were left in shock and were asking the question: “Where is WaldOh?”. Lucky for us, WaldOh created a group not to long ago where we’ll be submitting any further information we’ll receive from the kidnappers. WaldOh group can be found here

At the same time, we’ve also created a donation page on SLProfiles where our members can donate lindens to guarantee the safe return of our dear friend WaldOh. Members can donate in world and all money donated goes towards Relay For Life. We’ve been showing ribbons for Relay For Life on profiles of members that donated money for a while now www.slprofiles.com/relayforlife.asp and any money donated towards WaldOh’s return will also go towards these ribbons
www.slprofiles.com/waldodonations.asp.

Any help we can get to guarantee the safety of WaldOh would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I find this really tasteless, lame, and retarded.

It’s a gimmick, and not a genuine event, a press hype thing. And I find it really awful that the only way the American Cancer Society can go about raising money in SL is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator of what they imagine is popular activity, dating auctions and capture roleplay. Ugh. Raise your cancer money some other way, dudes, I already gave at the office.

Could have been a bit more tastefully done though.

The comments here prove that you guys are all about ragging on everydamn thing you read, see, hear, or swallow. Take a pair a tongs and pull that bug outta your azz.

It’s obvious that the complainers use any justification they can for not contributing to charity – I doubt you guys give anything but wind.

I can hear you guys already…

“Girl Scout Cookies??? I’ll tell you where you can shove those trans-fat, sugary death pills!”

    or…

“Cancer??? I don’t see anybody giving me any money for my debilitating melancholia!”

    or…

“Disabled Vets??? Hell, I don’t care if they’ve lost both legs – I can’t even TP without my prim penis attachment being shoved up my azz.”

I hope I die of cancer someday so I can come back and haunt you.

…this is stupid. for charity or not, this is horrible.

I lost someone to cancer and I find this disgusting and retarded at the same time.

hell they basically took the lindberg baby ransom letters and edited them slightly too.

    this fails hard.

Billy: “I hope I die of cancer someday so I can come back and haunt you.”

That was totally uncalled for, all I was pointing out was the whole “kidnap” thing was a little tasteless, I’m all for giving to charity.

P.S. it’s spelt “Ass” not “Azz”

I’m having a hard time taking in all this hate. I dont believe any of you were at the event, if you had been you would have seen that it was anything but tasteless. Everyone had a great time dancing and giving lindens to a great cause. We are also having good clean fun trying to find waldo and collecting his ransom money. I think its an original idea that peeps are having fun with. Is this hurting anyone? Reading the comments over it sounds that you all must be very young or just very hateful. The people behind this event and all the others in SLRFL work very hard and i find YOUR comments tasteless and offensive. See if you can raise 20 million lindens! Pfffttt

LOL – seems like the typical comments we always see on SecondLifeHerald which is why I like this site – hehe. Anyway – I think it’s great – I don’t know who WaldOh actually is on our site but since it helps to raise money for charity I’m all for it which is why I decide the spread the word. I wonder how many of the people that commented here actually do something for Relay For Life?

Right. They raise money for research on how to beat one of the most horrible diseases known to man, and while at it, put in a little game element, a little bit of fun in it, and people are complaining about that?

WTF is wrong with you people?!?

You all disgust me. At least have the balls to admit who you are if you’re complaining, geez.

Two thumbs up for the Cancer society and WalDoh!

“Good clean fun?” What is this, Leave it to Beaver? Oh, grow up. I’m hardly young, and I’m not “hateful,” I just call a hypervent when I see one. I hate it when people put on shows, and then try to enlist the press as a gullible PR partner in a story that reads like something out of your high-school newspaper. Take it to the Blingtard or SLNN. The Herald doesn’t have the reporters or the readers to sit still for something as hokey as this.

I’ve been a long-time critic of ACS in SL, and I think I have a reasonable and thoughtful critique that people have the right to have about these giant, industrial-sized charities that command tremendous resources and influence. They don’t have little cancer-helping circles, that’s not their profile. They support research and doctors, not patient care, it’s not your local support group/hospice, and people shouldn’t be confused about that.

Oh, and I do *absolutely nothing* for Relay for Life, and never plan to. And that’s really lame, trying to beat up on a fellow SL resident for simply *chosing not to give to one of these big, bloated American charities*. It’s not some local support group or prevention group. It’s a heavily-funded lobbying group that sustains the huge enterprise of doctors and pharmaceutical companies in treatment, not prevention. I’ve given my money for cancer *to other organizations*, that’s all because I can *chose* what to do with my charity dollar, and not be railroaded into some Soviet subbotnik to have to give to this one.

I have lost several to cancer and have been affected myself and find this a great and brilliant money raising idea at the same time.

However even though I do tend to give a little to the Cancer Society (they do give comfort to the affected). Prokofy’s statement is 100% right in that they indeed are “a heavily-funded lobbying group that sustains the huge enterprise of doctors and pharmaceutical companies in treatment, not prevention” – do you know the millions that would be out of jobs and the billions in money that would be lost is they actually found “the cure”? So most of my money tends to go to other organizations local and far reaching.

Prokofy Neva – you know what is great about SL RLF? It gives people the opportunity to give money to Relay For Life that maybe would have never given any money in the first place so what’s wrong with that? It gives people like myself that live behind their computer (lol – can’t wait to read your comment about that one!), the opportunity to make a difference (I wonder what you’ll say here). I’m not sure why you feel you have to make fun of people: “What is this, Leave it to Beaver? Oh, grow up. I’m hardly young, and I’m not hateful” or “in a story that reads like something out of your high-school newspaper. Take it to the Blingtard or SLNN”. What’s the sense of comments like that? To hurt people? To be hateful? You really think you’re so much better then them? What makes you so special? Do you talk like that to people in RL as well? Anyway – at least you have the decency to use your real Second Life name when posting negative comments and for that – thanks. Can’t wait to talk to you in Second Life.

I think the issue is that more and more people are becoming aware of the fact that the majority of donations to the big corporate charities go towards administration and fund raising. Giving to charity is good but you should keep it in your own backyard. Local charities suffer because of the large advertizing budgets of corporate charities. I suggest you give through your church, temple, mosque or synagogue and you can always check with your local Better Business Bureau to see where the money is actually going. I know that with many national and international charities only 10% of the gross actually goes to the beneficiaries of the charities, while the CEOs get bloated salaries like the CEOs of major corporations. Charity begins at home. I myself prefer to direct my efforts towards my local homeless shelters.

Unbelievable the things the people find to complain about. Why do you all care so much to criticize a group of people taking their own time and energy to create something interesting (maybe not to you, but quite a few others seem to like it) to help raise money for cancer research? Is this all that you can find to complain about? If we spent the afternoon playing tic-tac-toe, why do you care as long as money is raised to benefit something good? These people are spending their time doing something to help others, unlike you, who sit there wasting your time spouting off your hateful remarks that benefit nobody. You don’t believe in supporting cancer research? Fine, find something you do believe in and spend your time on that.

“And that’s really lame, trying to beat up on a fellow SL resident for simply *chosing not to give to one of these big, bloated American charities*.” -Prokofy Neva

And sorry to say, what is lame is the hateful and petty remarks I’ve seen regarding this article. So, once again, why dont you go waste your time on something worthwhile?

    Jun 15th, 2007

Oh, Prok hush !! … I’ll agree with you it’s a big well oiled mammoth of an organisation that probably lands more money in the hands of the industry than anything else BUT, I’ve seen how the enthusiasm of the volunteers creates an atmosphere in which people at least think about these things. Maybe next time it will not be RFL they donate to but something they feel is worthwhile. Just take the longterm effect in account.

To those who feel the need to criticize this initiative for whatever reason, the group that is behind the “Where is WaldOh?” initiative is a bunch of people who have their hearts in the right place and at least try to do something. That is still a lot more valuable than sitting on your ass and commenting…

Yeah… the thing about REAL charities are harmless and playful, like a PG-family kind of thing, but…

In the random notes pointed out not a very PG-family fun.

“…or I cut off his arms and tape em to his forehead!”
“…start saving your lindens or your waldoh will be like bread dough, baked in a oven!”

That screams violent action in the charities with threat calls.

This reminds me another donation abuse. It’s just like one fag idiot who had a website about killing his white rabbit and eat it if no one pay him monthly. Had set up a lot of “cute” pictures of the white rabbit, as you scroll down, it shows more violent image of him doing to the rabbit. PETA group tried to sue him and take the rabbit out of his hands. The result? I don’t know, it’s something I saw few years ago on a national news site.

But of course… I’m not saying there’s a group like PETA for WaldOh or whatever that silly crap gotta go around. The point is… it’s a bad form of charities. I’d suggest thinking something else besides anything that has to do with threatening people.

I think it’s cool people want to get involved in raising money for good causes. However, the problem I have with the American Cancer Society (the same problem I have with the United Way) is that the incomes of the individuals running these organizations is several million dollars each. Why are these execs getting such ridiculous dollar amounts from the money donated for charity? If they can lower their incomes to say, oh, $100k a year, then they’d be on my donating list. Who couldn’t live well enough on an income like that?

I have a much more effective pitch for collecting donations…

“Gimme L$10 or I kick you in the nuts.”

Even if they *DO* give me L$10, I still kick ‘em in the nuts.

I’m not in it for the money, you see. I do it for kicks.

Hey Just Cat, don’t get me started on the united way – now there is charity NOT to give to – give to the individual charities they have listed because thats the only way they will see any real money. If i am not mistaken back in the 80′s the CEO of united way was charged with stealing from the company even with his multi million dollar salary and fled the country – or something along those lines.

Umm hate to break it to you Nacon but this is SL not RL. Wald Oh is NOT REAL. Can’t you come up with anything better than that? I’m pretty sure that most of us in the ADULT grid know that nobody is going to be harmed when this is over with..whether they come up with the money or not. Can you really call a cartoon character such as Wald Oh a person? I mean look at the abuse Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck get.I think if you complain about this then you have too much time on your hands.

  40. Just Cat

    Jun 15th, 2007

    @Jaxi Morrison…

Instead of saying “individuals running these organizations,” I should have been more specific and said, “the CEO’s of each organization.” My mistake.

First off, the income for Mr. John R. Seffrin in the report you cited was from September 1, 2002 – August 31, 2003. Follow the asterisk next to his name and you’ll see it.

I know I read a couple of articles in the newspaper last year about the incomes because I was complaining about it to a friend. But, I’ve searched the net and can’t find anything to back up my words.

The ACS 2005 financial report doesn’t list individual income amounts paid (unless I’m just blind) and I can’t find anything more recent than that 2003 report you linked to. In the four years since though, I bet substantial raises have been given.

I don’t want to eat my words, but if I have to I will choke them down.

The point though… way too much income for charitable organization employee.
