SLCC 2011 — Lab Prepares For Repeat Resident Chalk Assault?

by Pixeleen Mistral on 10/04/11 at 8:12 pm

Will the news that the 2011 Second Life Community Convention is to be held in San Francisco sometime in August lead to a run on water, buckets, brushes and other cleaning supplies as Linden Lab shores up it's defenses against a shrinking customer base?

Ban Prok
The Second Life mainland in real life - SLCC 2009

The stakes are high, and it is believed that some players may already be stockpiling chalk in preparation for a repeat of the previous SLCC assault on the Lab's headquarters. The 2009 SLCC surprise attack left behind user-generated content which temporarily decorated the Lab's headquarters with the sort of chaotic crowd-sourced aesthetic for which the Second Life mainland is well known. Unfortunately for the Lab, the auto-return setting on the HQ plot was not functioning in real life, and both Sensipoo and Hubris Linden were forced to clean up after the players. Some things never change.

Meanwhile, members of the SL fanboy community denounced the chalking of the game gods' temple - widely believed to be sacred in fanboy circles - as a case of real life griefing and launched an internet detective investigation of possible culprits. A 2011 SLCC repeat of the 2009 chalking incident could be seen by fanboy groups as an attack on the very foundation of law and order in Second Life. Clearly, this is serious business.

Will the real life typists behind the Justice League Unlimited form a superhuman shield to protect the sanctity of the Linden's real life HQ? Will the Lab staff be able to get the bugs out of their real life eject and ban powers without a rolling restart of San Francisco? And most important, in the event of chalked messages adorning the Lab, which Linden will draw the short straw and be forced to scrub the walls this time?

Don’t worry, the JLU has volunteered to stand vigil outside the temple gates for the duration.

They have aerosol chalk now, all the groups on my campus use it. It washes off with the rain, just like normal chalk, but it stands out better and is easier to use. It probably looks more suspicious if you get caught using it outside a college campus, though.
