Wired News Picks up Alphaville Elections
by Alphaville Herald on 12/03/04 at 12:22 pm
As election fever grips Alphaville, the race for the Presidency of the Alphaville Government has caught the attention of greater cyberspace and the story has been picked up by Wired News.
The wider interest in the election is not surprising, given the questions that are raised. For example, to what extent is an election like this establish more than a roleplay government? Does this mark an important milestone in the emergence of user-initiated online governance structures? Can users restore order to a gaming environment that has been utterly abandoned by it’s corporate overlord (i.e. EA)?
Recapping your upcoming election events. Tonight, Ashley Richardson and Seth Galloway are scheduled to debate the issues. Tomorrow, March 13, voting will take place on the website of the Alphaville Government. Winner will face Mr-President in an April 10 election. Best of luck to all!

“to what extent is an election like this establish more than a roleplay government?”
Hardly any.
“Does this mark an important milestone in the emergence of user-initiated online governance structures?”
Possibly.
“Can users restore order to a gaming environment that has been utterly abandoned by it’s corporate overlord (i.e. EA)?”
Not with the tools we currently have to work with.
