The Second Life Way

by Alphaville Herald on 15/04/04 at 3:03 pm

While EA and Maxis continue to treat their customers like garbage, offering little freedom for creative play, no opportunity for the introduction of custom content, and no reward for either, Second Life has introduced tools for the introduction of creative content, user ownership of user created custom content an a generous reward program for users that introduce this content. Here is the current reward program.

“This month $1,000 will be awarded to the impressarios of Second Life’s most popular destinations, as measured by dwell. In April, we’ll award an additional total of $500 to those who create great content that isn’t necessarily a place or can’t accurately be measured by dwell.

In the beginning of each month, we’ll announce a new category -anything from best avatar to most compelling terraforming – and you’ll have most of the rest of the month to create or revise your genre-defining work.

The top content will be selected by a rotating panel of esteemed Linden judges: the top pick earns a $250 Developer Incentive, $150 goes to the next choice, and third spot takes home $100. “

Maybe we should form a little Alphaville retirement community there. I believe that there are already a fair number of Alphavillians who have move there (Maria LaVeaux and Toy if I’m not mistaken, for example.) I think 2L would be really supportive of your show, Coco. Same for Oprah’s show. Maybe when they pull the plug on alpha…

I have DSL and it’s never enough. SL is very demanding, graphics-wise and accepts no substitutes (unlike TaleInTheDesert where I already got off the island and into the worlds even without the latest graphic cards — it lets me take it slowly and gives me options to reduce graphic features.

You have to know HTML to make the custom stuff for SL. It’s not like the offline Sims where you can pop a jpeg of a Tibetan rug into Housemaker and walla, you can be in Tibet in your Sim house. I don’t want to become an HTML monkey just to play a game.

if anyone knows this girl they know toy keeps her TSO acct for just special occasions now….. toy has been on SL going on 3 months now and cannot say a bad word about it….. SL sets one free so to say :) yes the scripting is C++ and java based but its learning new things and actually using ones brain in a game is such a beautiful thing…. I have built a wonderful hjome there, done extensive terraforming in creating a wonder waterfalls on girls land :) and girls avatar is one of a kind :) it feels so good knowing SL offers one to think and use their imagination for a change :)

yes its very demanding graphics wise and brain power wise hehehe but the results are well worth it :)

so RIP TSO this girl like many more will continue to leave and go where one is appreciated for their input and not treated as a ‘monkey face’

    falara kajira toy :)

I tried There and thought it was really lame, but when I checked out SL I was thrilled out of my mind! I’m dusting off my old graphics skills and anxious to actuallly LEARN something! Anybody wanna buy 3 TSO accounts cheap? LOL

SecondLife isn’t so much demanding on the video card, as it is demanding on the CPU. There’ve been reports of people playing with GeForce MX2 cards, backed by a fast CPU.

From personal experience, I can say that it is possible to play SL using a dialup connection, as long as you use a high-speed connection the first time you log in. It’s not fun, but it works.

For those of you still interested, I am still in TSO.
My computer(the Famous P.O.S. Brand) does not yet have the Graphics capability to allow me to join my toy in SL. She has been setting up our living arrangements there while i Price a new computer. My relationship with toy is still strong, and loving, but we keep it in other venues now, until i join her.

I still like TSO, but it is a Grand potential, Unrealized, and unlikely to be so at any time soon. So, when i am Capable, I will be joining my Precious toy in SL. I will still play TSO as long as i have friends and Sim Family there, but this Mistress needs Challenges.

Get off your Thumbs EA/Maxis, People are looking elsewhere.

    Maria.
