GameSpot on SL v. 1.4

Nice little description of Second Life’s new version 1.4 in GameSpot. There are some new screen shots up today too. The part I found most telling was the summary, however:

“This game is like The Sims Online but in 3D and with user creation built in and central to the gameplay.”

Does this game have skill levels to achieve like in other games? Does it have job objects where you can make money to spend in the game?

no and no as far as I know — at least no official skill levels or built-in job objects. There is a weekly (monthly?) salary but if you want more than that you have to make things and sell them if that is your game, or you might hold events and charge admission (admission for entry is a feature built into the property settings), or you may just want to explore or maybe do the mafia thing. Like I say, there are no official skill levels, but its pretty obvious who the 31337 artisans and event planners are. There are also the familiar rankings of places with most “dwell” and various individual rankings (however they do not rank the “most notorious” and “meanest” like on TSO).

There are a lot of things to buy, but on the other hand there is a large gift economy and building stuff costs nothing (downloading textures into the game will cost you, however). The big expense would be if you want your own land. Land is finite and expensive.

I like the ability to make money on job objects in TSO; you don’t have to be make stuff to do it, and you don’t even have to talk to anybody else to do it. Good, easy way to make money without any effort to speak of. I would miss that a lot.

I also like that in SL you can make REAL LIFE MONEY off your creations!!!!

I HATE that in There you could only (a) design yet more tedious clothes or hoverboards (and pay There rl money for the submission of them) or else pay rl money to There for the T-bucks to buy them, or you couldn’t have anything.

Guess that means what I’d like best is TSO with SL’s custom content.

    Uri never speak 1337 again.

In the earlier article, Linden said it takes 10 hours to become fimilar with the game. I beg to differ, I was in there for maybe 12 or so hours, and I still was like “what the fuck is this game”. The whole idea of creating -> selling .. I didn’t understand one bit, and I really wanted to, because I would love to make my own clothes. And I hate to sound egomanaic, but I think I do a darn good job with graphics. And these elements aren’t explained before you download and play. You have to depend on learning with your self *self reliance*.

Yeah Coco, there are moments in SL when I wish I could just go somewhere and do brain dead skilling. Seriously! I guess the only way that is going to happen is if some users decide to create a TSO-type game within SL. I’ve thought about this. You could have a store and offer credits (mint your own store currency)and offer it to people who sit around and read books. The benefit to the owner would be increased dwell and hence a more visible store.

I agree with Ian. I tried it out for 2 days and i was so freaking lsot on what to do. The game makes every thing so hard. They need to have easier ways to build houses and not have to go to take classes. In tso it was so easy. Even poor people has/had homes. Thats one of the main reasons i gave up on it.
