The MIT Technology Review reports that computer scientist Guangyou Xu of Tsinghua University in Beijing has developed software that enables a computer to learn to read facial movements, particularly those of the lips. It is hoped that this software will enable game avatars to become more expressive and vivid.

Other possible uses for this software may included surveillance video analysis. The hope is that the software will enable computers to be trained to read lips.
