“Extortion!”: Anshe Chung Accuses SL Gangs of Using Criminal Tactics to Force Below Market Land Sales

by Alphaville Herald on 14/01/05 at 7:42 pm

Land Baroness Anshe Chung has had it with SL gangs that try to make her sell property on the cheap by engaging in what she says amounts to extortion. By erecting hideous builds, deploying lag objects, and scaring off potential buyers by their notorious behavior, the gangs are in effect attempting to intimidate Anshe into selling to them below market value. Or so she says. And what are the Lindens doing about it? Virtually nothing, according to Anshe. In this interview we talk to Anshe about the problem (we are currently seeking the W-Hat P.O.V.).

AVDetector whispers: Making icon for Anshee Chung
Anshee Chung: Hi :-)
You: thanks for stopping by… So you hare having trouble with the W-hats?
Anshee Chung: Well, I have experienced some land extortion by two groups. The W-Hats was second group this week.
Anshee Chung: First was Biffy Pendragon whom I was told belongs to “the Pendragons” whatever that means
You: what do you mean by ‘land extortion?’
Anshee Chung: Land extortion is when somebody tries to force other people either sell their own land below value or buy his land above value
You: what are they doing to try to get you to sell?
Anshee Chung: Common tactics is to put ugly things on land or laggy things etc. that make things unbearable for neighbours or land in neighbourhood unsellable

Nice Neighbors! A screenshot of the “architectural griefing” being deployed by the W-Hats

You: Are you positive they are doing this to get you to sell?
You: sell to them, I presume
Anshee Chung: Yes I am
Anshee Chung: In case of W-Hats I received one offer for my land shortly after I bought it
Anshee Chung: After I declined the offer the person told me that sooner or later they would get the land cheap anyway because nobody wants live next to them, pointing to the things they put on their land
You: did you file an abuse report with the Lindens?
Anshee Chung: Of course
You: did they respond?
Anshee Chung: But one week ago multiple people filed abuse reports about Biffy Pendragon and while I received one “resolved” e-mail in that case the issue was not solved until today
Anshee Chung: So I had no reason to expect it would be different with the W-Hats
You: so you are concerned that the Lindens will be slow to resolve the situation
Anshee Chung: I am concerned that the Lindens won’t resolve the situation at all since in the past they did not do
Anshee Chung: There were also cases months ago that were not resolved
Anshee Chung: Those problems magically disappeared when Paris Parks and her alts were banned for other reasons
You: Have you had trouble with other extortion groups in the past?
Anshee Chung: I don’t very much care about wether it is the W-Hats or somebody else. It is the practice. It is basically blackmail and mafia methods.
Anshee Chung: I had some issue last summer in two sims.
You: did BallerMoMo’s crew ever engage in this kind of extortion?
Anshee Chung: Who is BallerMoMo?
You: lol, nvm
You: What do you want the Lindens to do?
Anshee Chung: Remove the offending builds and give the people involved one warning.
You: after that?
Anshee Chung: If they do it again ban them
You: its’ easy enough to come back, just another cc is all you need
Anshee Chung: I know that it needs intelligent judgement on case by case because formulating one clear policy is hard
Anshee Chung: It needs human judgement to decide what is just ugly building and what is structure used to grief or extort
You: true
Anshee Chung: It would be nice if Linden Lab could give us some statement what they plan to do and what we as residents can do to handle such problem
Anshee Chung: If some people can get away with it more and more people will do it, especially if they can get money that way
You: Thanks Anshe!
Anshee Chung: Thank you Urizenus :-)

JC you can’t bust a nut, so what makes you think you can use your “tactics” over some script kiddies.

You left out the part where the group bought the land today for a fair price from Anshe. I know what Anshe paid for the land, I was there when she bought it.

I am the one who offered her a fair price for the land just shortly after she originally bought it on behalf of W-hat. Yes, I told Anshe that people do not buy land in Baku because they do not like to live next to W-hat. That doesn’t seem to be stretching the truth, but I don’t think that’s a threat. It’s just the truth. I don’t think it’s good to try to be paranoid about everything everyone says, do you?

Now, Anshe told me that she was going to tell you, Urizenus, that this was just an exaggerated misunderstanding. So I guess that part didn’t make print somehow. Would be nice if next time you print the whole story rather than just one side. Thanks.

Actually, to be more clear, that sentence should be: I am the one who, on behalf of W-hat, offered her a fair price for the land just shortly after she originally bought it.

“Anshe told me that she was going to tell you, Urizenus, that this was just an exaggerated misunderstanding.”

Well Baku, I didn’t excise any of her remarks, so if she thought it was a misunderstanding she didn’t say so. As for “the other side,” I think I made it clear that this was Anshe’s allegation, and that we were seeking the “W-Hat P.O.V”. So don’t get all huffy with me. Oh and, that was some really sweet artword the W-Hats erected on her border, don’t you think? Just curious: why were you in the middle of this?

So are you saying she didn’t contact you like she said she would? This is the SL Herald, yes? She told me exactly: “Anshe Chung: Let me check if I can still stop that one” because we talked about it & realized that it was a misunderstanding.
Couldn’t you have just asked her who the leader of W-hat is? It’s really not a mystery if she knows, just ask her.
I am a proud officer of W-hat. I was not in the middle of anything. I was the impetus & cause of this, because I offered to buy the land from her as she’d gotten there first.

And that artwork is always there. I love Baku sim & have lived there from the start, with the group, W-hat.

I just logged in and there was a message from her, but frankly it raises still more questions. One might reasonably ask if you guys successfully “got to her”. She certainly doesn’t say that it was a misunderstanding, but rather that there was an apology for the behavior of two W-Hat members. However, we have received more reports of disturbing W-hat behavior in this matter and are investigating them. Of course we have all heard the “few bad apples” excuse before, so forgive us if it raises antenna now. Of course we are anxious to get the W-Hat side as well, and have assigned that job to Mr. Fairplay. I would of course be happy to speak to W-Hat leadership (and members) about this or any other matter.

By the way, you saw that that “artwork” is always there, but I wonder: were the anti-Anshi posters always there as well?

I don’t know about any anti-Anshe posters, and frankly, it appals me that you seem to want to stir up more problems when the situation has been resolved amicably. When two people make a friendly arrangement, and are on good terms, that is always what matters most.

I paid more than I wanted to for the land, I contributed my own money. I guess we really “got to her” because I paid a very reasonable price for the land, which was more than she bought it for (a decent profit).

I did not apologize for anything. We realized it was a misunderstanding.

To her credit, Anshe was a very polite business woman just as I am always polite with the people I do business with. I have done business with Anshe for many months on a personal level (as in, not related to W-hat). There was never any bad blood between Anshe and I and I hope there never is. I don’t like to have bad blood between people.

I hope that this clears it up once and for all. I thank you for the opportunity to speak and I feel I have answered all your questions. 8)

I didn’t say that there was an apology, I said that Anshe *said* the W-hats had apologized. I don’t know who is supposed to have apologized, but if they did (as she says) they were probably smart to do so. Apologizing beats getting banned, don’t you think?

Baku, don’t worry, Uri is always looking for drama to report on. He contacted me about two weeks ago to interview me on the tartarus drama and my suspension. I didn’t bother replying.

Hmmm good point Ryen, and come to think of it, you were with the W-Hats when you got suspended, no? Care to share with us now?

Oh, and you probably didn’t realize this since you would otherwise never insert yourself into Herald drama, but Bakuzelas can actually be reached directly in SL! Yes, its true! Believe it or not you can avoid this unhappy Herald drama altogether by just communicating with him directly.

I’d feel bad if someone was actually planning to build on the land, but when it’s a land baron who only buys and resells for profit it just makes me laugh. Who wouldn’t want some W-Hats for neighbors they look like they know how to have a hell of a party.
