Increasingly, many Second Life residents are re-assessing what they really want from their experience here. The popularity of Gigas’ new Azure Islands sims reflects this new trend. People are moving to zoned sims with higher frame-rates and minimal lag.

They are building homes for themselves in managed sims where there are no clubs or commercial structures. At the Azure Islands there is actual parkland, roads and trees. Since Gigas (the guys behind www.secondserver.net) own the whole island, they can offer you rentals or discounted rates on the land tier fees – sometimes up to 40% cheaper than Linden Lab.

Hey, I recognize this pic! It is the view from my front yard! I love living in this zoned Sim, and I loved living in the zoned Sim they owned before.

But here, because it’s an island, we also get full permissions on our land. I can view videos of my own choosing (and have), and have full terraforming privileges and everything.

I am just a basic member, and I don’t buy money, but I have been able to afford living here, and in their earlier Sim. I “bought” my land from them and pay “tier” to them each week, and I have 509 prims to play around with. There are other plans, too. I can actually have more this way for less money. (In fact, for no money – I pay for it all in Lindens.)

It is my opinion – and mind you, I have played only three months – but it is my opinion that these zoned sims are a wonderful place to have your personal home, and they will become more and more common in time. And they FEEL so much like a neighborhood! I became really happy in the game for the first time when I discovered these guys and moved into their zoned neighborhood. It is just very nice. I go elsewhere when I want to go to clubs, or shop, or whatever.

I’m thinking about becoming a premium member, but I would still live here on this beautiful island. I figure I could use my 512 for a shop of my own somewhere.

That’s nice to hear Coco. Maybe some other neglected souls can find happiness in a zoned SL area too. When the bad dream is finally over, SL should get alot more residents. :)

This zoned sim that you live in sounds great! I am very glad to hear that you are enjoying SL and hope you continue doing so. I assume that seeing you are playing SL now that you have escaped from TSO, or are you playing both? I would appreciate your thoughts comparing the two. Perhaps you could write an article.

As for your opening a store, I bet you will do well and have a lot of fun with it.

I tried SL, and although it was head and shoulders above TSO it just wasn’t the game for me. I’m not going to bad mouth SL, I think it does a pretty good job of providing what their customers want (unlike EA). I played ATitD for a year or so and enjoyed that and am now playing Eve.

Have fun with your second life ;)

I agree with you to a point. After EA puts TSO out of its misery you will see some people move over, but I would say that a lot of those that can or want to play SL have already left. After all, TSO is down to 37k players or so in January – and falling – while SL has been growing.

Have you read the TSO boards lately? Those people are unbelievable. Not trying to be mean here, but if the posters on the TSO Stratics board are indicative of the remaining TSO players then the community has gotten even dumber than it was. Something I didn’t think possible. This handful of remaining errrr “people” wouldn’t enjoy Second Life IMO. Nor do I think the SL community would be thrilled with an influx of dumbasses.

Kiss, I still play TSO. I got a second account for it when they opened up DC, cause my three characters were so old, with such a high property object limit and all, but I recently canceled it. I have been going back on Saturdays to play Simball, and now that the seaasojn is over, I will go back again to going back on Friday nights for Friday Nights in Interhogan.

My problem with TSO was, and has been for quite a while, not enough people. There was not much sense in me doing anything with the population that sparse. My last recommendation was that they combine cities somehow, to bring back some of the excitement and vibrancy the game used to have.

I looked at the boards today and saw that the city calendars had been combined into one, so that’s a good start. Yes, I would love to write an article comparing the two games – assuming Uri and Walker would cough up enough Lindens for it, lol.
