Did Lindens Attempt to Prevent Plastic Duck from Talking to the CBC?

by Alphaville Herald on 17/12/05 at 1:38 pm

Several days ago we posted an announcement that a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio station in Toronto was looking for SL residents to interview about the game. They were looking to find residents without going through the Linden Lab filter. In the comment thread to that announcement, infamous SL griefer and Toronto area resident, Plastic Duck announced that he was going to contact the reporter. Now Plastic Duck is reporting on the Something Awful Forums that Linden Lab contacted the CBC and asked to speak about Mr. Duck – either to give their spin on Duck, or perhaps to persuade the CBC not to interview him. Apparently the plan has backfired badly. The Lindens merely drew attention to Duck, made him seem more interesting than he actually is, and of course did not anticipate that their communications with the CBC might leak into the blogosphere. And in Mr Duck’s post on the Something Awful forums he releases is what he claims is a copy of the Linden letter to the CBC. A copy is reprinted under the fold…

I noticed your call for interviews in the Second Life Herald and wanted to speak with you directly about Plastic Duck. You may or may not know that Plastic Duck has been banned from Second LIfe for griefing and generally anti-social behavior. Among his offenses, he has:

- Stolen scripts and republished them on the web
- Hired residents to negative rate other residents
- Dropped the infamous Goatse image all over Second Life
- Harassed the furry community
- Sexually harassed female residents
- Spammed other with Penis images
- Was part of the group that recreated a flaming World Trade Center in Second Life with a smashed plane smashed and falling bodies.

You probably won’t get a very balanced interview from him. And he is certainly not representative of our community.

Plastic Duck is furious, charging the Lindens sending “libelous lies” to the media:

“Is that cool or what?! I have a fucking GAME DEVELOPER e-mailing news reporters libelous lies about me! Not only are some of those accusations completely false, but they also decided that being in w-hat is an offense because some people made a flaming WTC.

No wonder Linden Labs is running their business at a loss. They need to really pull their shit together. Stop hiring abuse team idiots to read forums and herald articles and start hiring coders who know how to make a proper online game and not those monkeys you have implementing pointless pixel shaders.”

I wonder if he knows it’s only libelous if it’s published, and even then it’s the publisher who is liable, he published it when he posted it on the said forum, lol, not LindenLab

I’m not furious. I think it’s pretty cool that Linden Labs cares enough to do that for me :)

Lindsay from CBC Radio said she will probably be contacting me in January to schedule some kind of interview. They want me to go to their radio station and tell them about SL and help them set up an avatar and such. Should be fun! I do genuinely like SL if you guys didn’t know that. I plan on showing them a fair perspective of the game.

Tony Walsh, I meant to add this to my last comment but forgot. I have no idea which linden sent it, it was copied and pasted into a new e-mail for me so I can’t check where it originated from. I will try and find out when I do the show.

What was libelous about all those listed offenses? I personally have direct experience of many of them.

I’d be interested to know how Linden Lab defined the concept of “anti-social”. Is that a word in the TOS?

The last point is unacceptable. LL may be surprised to find that outside the US that makes _them_ look bad, not the w-hats. Nationalist button pushing doesn’t work outisde the country of origin..

Regardless of what one’s political views are, I would think people could agree that a build parodying a horiffic event that killed more than a thousand people of multiple nationalities is in rather bad taste.

It’s one thing to have “art” on your land that is some kind of tasteless “happening” or “conceptual installation” — I suppose that’s legitimate, regardless of its shock value. But when it comes after you in the game, it’s another thing. When the artist dons as an avatar a burning building, dive-bombs your events, and bumps you with his “World Trade Center,” then it crosses the line from art to griefing.

Of course, the Lindens only react to the bumping part and are colour-blind to the rest, and proud of it. They want the climate for creativity to be maximized for their product development and pet junior game devs, and householding and civilization be damned. It’s that attitude that will cost them a significant player base when some other company figures out that a sturdier TOS and a more common-sense approach to upholding it is required for business to thrive.

The Lindens time and again make clutched-up-liberal interpretations of their TOS that shows they are utter hostages to the most narrow construction of any concept. They are unable to rise above their own literal-minded liberalism to realize they are creating an illiberal climate. This is often the flaw of liberalism that liberals are afraid to face — when their actions create illiberalism for others by allowing in illiberals, be they terrorists and extremists in real life, or griefers in virtual life.

Example: 2 Lindens will instantly show up to defend the TOS for some assmunch who has snagged 144m2 and is mounting an ugly spinning sign on it and flaunting the IMPEACH BUSH texture. They will defend to the death (your death) his right to bring 2 sims tiered by adults to their knees. The will insist that you not block his ugly build with trees or walls on all four sides, invoking TOS strictures about not blocking someone on their property. They profess to be really torn apart by this as the ruefully tell you that they must uphold the right of property owners to do WTF they want on their land. Regardless if the owner is land-scanning and buying a released 144 m2 and putting up signs ruining the view for the people who own the hundreds of thousands of surrounding meters.

“It’s that attitude that will cost them a significant player base when some other company figures out that a sturdier TOS and a more common-sense approach to upholding it is required for business to thrive.”

Prok really understands a huge problem in Second Life that has crippled the game for many users. This specific problem is the only reason I am no longer a resident. I felt so strongly about this issue that i dumped a promising design career in world, my officer status in New Citizens Inc and most sadly numerous friendships id nutured over time.

“They are unable to rise above their own literal-minded liberalism to realize they are creating an illiberal climate. Agreed and I completely support this view. However, It makes me very uncomfortable to have griefing in a game compared to terrorism in real life. I understand the connection being made. But I feel its a false connection. Living on the shore in Seattle, U.S.A Ive never experienced my freedoms taken away by terrorists. I cant even say I know of a person Ive met in the real world whose affected. The U.S. government has taken away many of the rights i once enjoyed, but these evil terrorists never materialized. In contrast, I was subject to relentless personal attack in Second Life by griefers. Ive known many individuals directly affected by griefing in that game. We’ve watched in disbelief and LL turned their backs on us, leaving us to fend for ourselves. And, in certain cases, punished victims of attacks along with the griefers, in an attempt to appear impartial.

Just what I’ve been trying to say, worded so well!

This is why SL will go to hell in a handbasket.

Currently it is going to hell in the handbasket belonging to Lazarus Divine and alts.
