Hiro

Hiro Pendragon, co-organizer of the Second Life Community Convention and Charter Member of the Feted Inner Core recently sent us news about the appearance of Make editor Phillip Torrone at the most recent SL Future Salon. That’s news to be sure; we always raise a glass to fello media giants who join us in world. But tucked away in Hiro’s post is the news that he has notified his employer that he is quitting and will be working in SL full time. Behold:

Yesterday morning I gave 2 weeks’ notice to my current employer. Starting January, I will be self-employed doing SL work full-time! It’s an exciting jump for me, obviously. For those curious, the business plan consists of a lot of contracting, expanding my SL business, and doing long-term projects like my SL search engine in development.

Congratulations, Hiro! With the coming of p2p, we have less of a world, and less of a sense of geographical space, and a lot of people throwing up privacy barriers or taking dunkings as they land at 128/128 when they select a sim name and teleport from the map list. But what we *do* have now is a very robust platform for the hanging of 3-D Junior Game Dev resumes. Because SL isn’t really a country or a world — that was just a marketing gimmick for feebs and choads — it’s just a monetarized platform for finding and keeping both people and ideas that keep the bleeding edge technology hemorrhaging.

As for the search engine project, I expect to see it 1) be taken over stealthily by LL, with a lot of crying by you later or 2) bought or leased from you without any open bid or transparency by LL, with a lot of gloating by you later.

What I’m pondering is whether you and FlipperPA might get together with his whitelist/blacklist idea, which fits with people like Thinker Traxx Hathor’s whitelist/blacklist ideas, and make sure that only whitelisted things/people end up in search engines…or at least make sure that blacklisted things fall to the bottom.

    Remember “What Hiro Erases?”

The one problem with banning people whose ideas you don’t like from your inworld properties is that they can’t buy your products or show newbies your products…but then, you want them to die anyway lol. Slashslashslash!

Hiro, I’m so happy for you, man. Do the “follow your bliss” thing and don’t let anyone tell you different.

I would have thought you’d need a modicum of talent or skill to back you up when taking the leap to full time work in SL, but kudos for having the balls to take this leap without possessing either!
