Lessig Coming to SL?

Hammie Linden is reporting that Lawrence Lessig is coming to Second Life in avatar form. Wow. That is huge. In my humble opinion Lessig is the most important legal figure alive, since he is working on issues that have maximal impact on our future — issues ranging from intellectual property to the way that code replaces law as our lives increasingly move online. His work provided the philosophical foundation for our forthcoming book Only a Game, and just a few weeks ago I posted links to a couple of his books here on the blog. Definitely check out Code as Law and Free Culture. They are both must reads, and the latter is available free online so you don’t have an excuse.

This sounds very interesting. I hope he doesn’t fall into the traps of others who come to study or grok SL and get shangaied by this or that interest group or who get comfortable with their little clique and think they understand it all. In his case, whether the SL Mediators or the Law Society or the Thinkers of the Future Salone or other elite groups — all of whom will want to mediate and fashion his incoming imporessions — I hope he can do his own vast field work, especially with alts if he is this famous.

Code isn’t going to be law. Over my dead body. We can go down fighting, anyway.

    Yup, Lessig is big.

This is a great way to draw a crowd into SL, if they ever really want to let the dogs out.. just invite famous geeks into SL.
