Dog Days of August for SLCC?

by Alphaville Herald on 11/04/06 at 12:20 pm

According to a post over at 3pointD.com, this year’s Second Life Community Convention is rumored to be scheduled for the dog days of mid-August, out in sunny San Francisco. Not much more information has surfaced yet, other than the fact that it looks like SL’s premier meatspace meet-up will take up three days this year instead of just one. But that shouldn’t stop you from saving the date. You know the Herald will be there.

I’m going to boycott it, and I won’t go, for all kinds of political reasons having to do with the really bad behaviour of the organizers on the forums and inworld and on here, including their threats to me to get me banned from the game, and their naked bids for power in the game, plus the undemocratic way these things are organized, without genuine community participation, and how they serve as merely a vanity showcase for the Electric Sheep Company in their fleecing exercises.

But, even if I was put on a token orgkomitet somewhere, I’d just have trouble justifying myself why, in the dog-days of August, I should go to SF, when I could be, I dunno, on Cape Cod or something. Why would I be spending thousands of dollars in airfare and hotel costs to go and…get drunk with FlipperPA, listen with hangover-headache to Hamlet nee Linden Au talk about himself, and watch Hiro Pendragon run around busily, avoiding real work and appearing to do work virtually while he gets his next “RL-in-SL” gig?

It’s not a place where there is a space *for people like me* there. It’s not home.

    This…is like…something I should *pay for*????

Well, there’s the Lindens, of course. Gosh, they can be FUN. I found that Philip, Cory, Ginsu, Robin, even Bub, were all really FUN. I just found them more intellectually fun at the SOP III part of that week, though, then at the SLCC part.

Their real-life personas talking about how they made this amazing country, with their peers in the legal/social/gaming fields, are just way, way more fun and interesting than their Linden personas spouting company propaganda to fanboyz.

I realize there are many treats to be offered here. For one, I think you get a tour of that really fabulously um interesting big square blue building in downtown SF that houses all our dreams, also known as the “colo”. As in “collocation”. As in “where the servers are located”. Kinda scary, eh? to think it’s all just in some blue box, just like TV is!

Well, and I think there are other treats in store. Like. Uhhhhhhh….hmmm. They’ll probably have a free keychain with the Hand of Fatima on it?

Well, I’m sure they’ll have them! Probably a machinima festival, too!

It’s all good. I realize I’m terribly behind now and hopelessly irrelevant — and the Herald can’t run AGAIN a story about OMGODZORRZZZ!!!!! look how Prok looks in RL! Hiro says I just don’t keep up with the um major developments of the Metaverse, and gosh, even reading Walker’s blogola almost every day, it’s just difficult staying on top of all these Googlyearthymyspacedtubedsheepdip thingies. Maybe it’s because when I look at them, they all remind me of like a lot of really bad grainy pictures of my cat, and my kids’ Lego sets. But I’m sure I just haven’t gotten the right perspective on this yet!

Bez politra ne razbiryoshya! (Without drinking a bottle of vodka, it is not possible to understand this!)

Mark, would it have been so hard to say, “Jerry told me” rather than that convoluted informant thing you wrote? :D hahahahah

Prok, I’m sure going to miss you arguing with Kendra and Pendari again!

It would not have been hard to say that, Hiro. But it would not have been accurate either.
