Griefer’s Delight – Live Help Discontinued

“Pyramid of Death” SpamTex, SpamLM flood crashes clients
LL support for paying customers “has gone in the toilet”

by Pixeleen Mistral, National Affairs desk

Billie_and_issa_2Wednesday’s demise of Live Help left most residents without a way to summon instant assistance from their metaverse service provider – Linden Lab. The Lab’s removal of live resident support has been especially unpleasant for Billie and Issa Scaggs who were both griefed with upwards of 10,000 textures and notecards – causing Billie’s client to crash, and serious inventory cleanup problems for both victims.

Mr. Scaggs told the Herald that after he crashed, “I had an additional 10,000 inventory items when I relogged and it resumed. It took nearly two minutes before i could go into busy mode to deflect the items being sent to me”.

Based on his description of the attack, this would appear to be some sort of scripted weapon that gives landmark and texture gifts and keeps on giving… and giving… and giving. Mr. Scaggs said, “the creators of the items are newbie_template Linden (which can not be muted) Jami Miles and paeoti Pomeray”.

Template_linden
newbie_template Linden is listed as creator of the SpamTex texture

Normal anti-griefing measures were ineffective. “I am accustomed to the more common attempts of griefing, but this was new. My first reaction was to disable scripts on the entire sim, which was of no use” said Mr. Scaggs.

Before the removal of Live Help wednesday, an IM to the helpful volunteers might have roused a Linden to look into the problem – but this sort of customer service is now a fading memory – and Lindens routinely hide their online status to avoid customer interaction outside of their office hours. Linden office hours are scheduled for to avoid times when peak resident use occurs – evenings and weekends. This does not seem to be a recipe for delighting customers.

This lack of live support is particularly galling to those paying several hundred dollars a month to rent virtual land. For instance, Billie Scaggs told the Herald he is paying monthly land tier bills of $295 USD – but he is far from happy:

“I think LL support has gone in the toilet since I joined. Back in sep-oct, the support was acceptable with response times and LL was quick to address any grid issues, but over the past months they have taken the position of throwing the paying residents to the wolves by killing live help, no response to support requests for months and Bug reports just go unanswered”

To get a sample of the Scaggs’ experience see below. Then ask yourself, when your chat history and inventory fills with this sort of thing, who do you contact now?

    1. Computer tampering is a misdemeanor
    2. 5/16D-3. Computer tampering

    (a) A person commits the offense of computer tampering when he knowingly and without
the authorization of a computer’s owner, or in excess of the authority granted
    to him
    (1) Accesses or causes to be accessed a computer or any part thereof, or a
    program or data;
    (2) Accesses or causes to be accessed a computer or any part thereof, or a
program or data, and obtains data or services
    (3) Accesses or causes to be accessed a computer or any part thereof, or a
program or data, and damages or destroys the computer or alters, deletes
or removes a computer program or data.

We didn’t access any program, computer, or data without consent of the user :)

How cute, Mootykips is quoting laws now. Too bad he breaks so many laws he can’t keep track anymore.

In 1992 Congress amended the computer crime statute to punish those who, without the knowledge and authorization of the “persons or entities who own or are responsible for” a computer, bring about the transmission of “a program, information, code, or command to a computer or computer system” with the intent to cause damage to the computer or information in the computer or prevent the use of the system. And federal raps are not misdeamonors. Maybe you are quoting a state law, but that is superceded by federal law in this case since the crime uses networks that cross state lines.

    Hey shockwave.

Post a link to the legal code that says that. I could say that congress amended it in 2000 to read “lol we like mudkipz” but without a link, its not true.

Also, crashing a sim merely reboots it. No computers were physically harmed, no data was lost.

Also, I believe that most computer laws are federal, since computers don’t give a shit about state lines.

sn4xis: Ask and ye shall receive. NIIPA

    http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/cybercrime/s982.htm

(5)(A) through means of a computer used in interstate commerce or communications, knowingly causes the transmission of a program, information, code, or command to a computer or computer system if

    (i) the person causing the transmission intends that such transmission will
    (I) damage, or causes damage to, a computer, computer system, network, information, data, or program; or
(II) withhold or deny, or cause the withholding or denial, of the use of a computer, computer services, system or network, information, data or program; and

(ii) the transmission of the harmful component of the program, information, code, or command–

    (I) occurred without the authorization of the persons or entities who own or are responsible for the computer system receiving the program, information, code, or command; and
(II)(aa) causes loss or damage to one or more other persons of value aggregating $1,000 or more during any 1-year period; or (bb) modifies or impairs, or potentially modifies or impairs, the medical examination, medical diagnosis, medical treatment, or medical care of one or more individuals; or

Since bringing down a sim by whatever means is a denial of service and operating beyond authority, the simcrashers are square in the crosshairs of this. BTW: the max prison time under this statute is FIVE years. But I was feeling generous.

    hahaha.

A.) We didn’t agreggate $1,000 in damages ($L don’t count, since they are not federally recognised as an actual currency).
B.) FBI doesn’t give a shit until the amount of damages exceeds $5,000 USD
C.) LL Didn’t secure their systems with even a basic heuristic system to detect sim crashing systems, so they’re equally at fault. They also DDoS themselves due to shitty programming, lame servers, and a shitty connection that has routing problems every time Phillip Linden farts
D.) lolprisonthreat. It’ll probably end up being probation or a hueg fine, along with loss of interbutt access for a few years.
E.) Half of the people involved are outside of the U.S.’ jurisdiction.
    F.) No one cares.

    >>>Also, crashing a sim merely reboots it. No computers were physically harmed, no data was lost.

I assume you’re Anonymous. By the way, a sim is a server. You can overload it and burn it out. Sometimes a sim has to be manually rebooted by a grid monkey that has to physically work on it in the real world since you clowns have lost so much touch with the real world itself.

By the way I’m sure the total damages you Anonymous has caused across the WHOLE net, not just Second Life, is enough to get alot of you party v& not to mention your penchant for turning cyber stalking into actual real world stalking.

Watch what the posts after this will have the usual tired Anonymous spiel such as “we just do it for the lulz.”

We haven’t done anything outside of SL, sorry. PN doesn’t represent *chan, and I don’t represent PN.

A little digging, and googling, on 4chan brought up this thread. Mucking through the thread I came to this page on the thread. Look for Mudkips Acronym. For those who don’t know Mudkips Acronym and Mootykips are one and the same.

    http://www.virtualpetlist.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242&page=21

Sure sounds like your doing things outside of Second Life. By the way you are the PN leader, like it or not now whenever do or say anything in public you represent the PN. You can double talk all you want. Sooner or later everything will catch up to you Mootykips. You can laugh all you want at that.

IntLib, for all you know, those are poseurs stealing names.
And here I thought you were a smart guy.

And to quote a post from further down that page you so adamantly linked to:

“Unorganised Anonymous raids preceeded the DDoS on 420chan, but legion did not get itself involved until after Keith’s attack. Make what you want of it, but really the question of morality is no longer relevant.”

The owner of Subeta initiated a DDoS attack on 420chan before all of Anonymous (or legion, as it’s called here) decided to participate. If Mudkips and other PN are participating, it’s because they are Anonymous – not because they are PN.

By the way, the whole shitfest over Subeta is because Subeta stole the Longcat meme and turned it into an e-item to be bought and sold.
In fact, it’s not even 3-money with little value (like Lindens); this is (as I understand it) a *donation* item. They’re selling a meme for legal tender, USD, whatever.
It’s a dishonor to the meme when you’re doing this, and very poor action on your part when you try to profit off something that’s been around (and very respected) since 2ch.

  12. NobodyImportant

    May 4th, 2007

Ah, excuse me. Missed a typo.
“In fact, it’s not even 3-money with little value [...]” should be “In fact, it’s not even e-money with little value [...]“.
