At Incandescent Artworks, the tradition of oil painting meets one of the newest forms of self expression, the Second Life avatar. They take a digital snapshot from the virtual world of Second Life and a professional artist creates a stunningly beautiful oil painting inspired by that image.. He interprets the avatar as a real person, humanizing it as he brings it to the canvas. A Second Life inspiration becomes his inspiration, and a centuries old technique captures a piece of technological wonder.

This all began when Incandenza Thorne approached her real-life friend, who happens to be an amazingly talented artist, about doing an oil painting of her avatar. She wanted a painting, and also was looking for a way to help the artist pay his rent and buy some food. The painting came out so well that she showed it to friends on SL, some of whom wanted their own. At that point, it seemed natural to open an art gallery and make his services available to the SL public at large.

At Incandescent Artworks you can see two beautiful works of art, presented with the SL source picture as well as pictures of the painting in progress. There is even a picture of a finished painting in the artist’s studio. (His shyness keeps him from being photographed, and from having his own avatar on SL – for now!)

Incandenza sincerely believes that the creation of an avatar is a significant form of self-expression, and that these innovative works of art honoring this digital self-expression in a traditional medium may one day be displayed in respected galleries and museums.

Now this is seriously cool. Kudos on this innovative idea. It’s always good to find ways to help your friends help themselves. You give them what they need without it feeling like charity.

I am impressed. This is definitely NOT a waste of talent as posted above. So many people on SL try to open businesses that mimic others. This story should inspire others to not simply copy what is already out there but to find their niche in inventing something new. Nice job.

Nice idea for a new service in SL … rather high end and specialized, obviously, but I think it’ll fill a niche .. I’m wishing them all the best with this venture

Definetely worth a look and a visit. I like the idea and how it’s done. Those paintings look better than any avatar would. No offense to the people behind the avatars intended of course.

Thanks for posting about your art, and your business; I think what you and your artist collaborator do is a really wonderful idea and I truly wish you luck with it. I know there are some who resent people posting articles about their SL businesses on SLH, advertising it in the process, but SL can be such a wonderful environment for artistic expression, and speaking only for myself, I really enjoy learning about new crafts and works and creative endeavors that people in SL are offering. It’s brave to put yourself out there, especially on SLH.

Yes, your article here is an ‘advertisement’, but it’s also you introducing yourself, trying to disseminate awareness of the time and work and dedication you’ve put into your project. Personally, I really appreciate learning about the creators behind the creations, and after reading your article I’ll definitely come check out your gallery/store in person.

Best of luck, and Blessed Be. :) )

Original idea, great talent and I hope it works for you. Personally I would rather the real me was painted like this than a computer character. It is like having a portrait of a stranger.
