History of Second Life Herald Wins Prestigious Award, Bitches

AAP awards Best in Media and Cultural Studies – WTF?

BookcoverYes, the infamous Doomsday book (The Second Life Herald: The Virtual Tabloid That Witnessed the Dawn of the Metaverse) penned by literary lions Ludlow and Wallace has shocked and awed friend and foe alike for months now, and the reviews have gushed over its Mark Leyneresque prose and its Quentin Tarantino plot stylings, but now even the academic publishers and their fellow travelers have weighed in with a simple message: this is one of the greatest works of something or other in weeks! really – at least two or three weeks!!!

In a press release dated Feb. 7, the Association of American Publishers (APA) announced that their Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division were giving a 2007 Award for Excellence to the Ludlow/Wallace masterpiece in the category of Media and Cultural Studies. And who can really blame them? To this end they join a chorus of fanbois, fangrrrls, and assorted fluffers who are all on the same page about this one deep truth: The Second Life Herald is not only the greatest online virtual tabloid covering virtual bukkake and griefer-on-furry drama in the metaverse, but the book is even better than that!

As the award committee said might have said: “If you haven’t read it, your life is fail.”

One can certainly imagine the Herald being worthy of this award, if one considers that it probably is meant in the same way that Ripley’s Museum was honored: as a nice sampler of burlesque and vaudeville that wasn’t classy enough to be performed.

Having gladly purchased a copy of this book at its release party in Brooklyn, I have finished reading this book today. This book gives a good experiential background of the evolving metaverse back from the prime days of The Sims Online, up and through Second Life, from the perspective of the avatar Urizenus and his typist.

This book, authored by Peter Ludlow and Mark Wallace, rightly comes to conclude and emphasize the need for the open and free platform for the Metaverse by citing the unfolding drama of various interpersonal, business and political struggles that have existed in virtual worlds. What is at stake is the future of the new media of the world. We need to be knowledgable and informed. I highly encourage the reading of this book.

I find a good read for a next book the short reading of the Metaverse Manifesto by Orange Montagne. Stand for your rights as free people, however we are represented, including through the ever-growing popular use of avatars. This is the virtual revolution. Power to the people!

I’m hoping to start a rebuttals page soon because I’m finding parts they just got wrong. It’s funny that they write about me, but never interviewed me for the book lol.

What happened to the 2nd and 1st place avatars of the year? Here it is Feb 17 already.

    Wow.

Sad part is, that this says more about the “Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division” and as such American publishing then about the tripe you find in this rag.

This is not a compliment for the Herald. This is an insult to the rest of the USA.

    Way to go :D

I wondered about that, I heard a rumor that I was being considered for one of those. That’d produce some good drama.

We had been waiting for the Lunar New Year celebrations to die down before announcing the avatar of the year and runner up – even though one group suggests Persian New Year would be better. However, the Herald Editorial board has decided to split the difference and make the 2008 announcement sometime between Lunar New Year and Persian New Year. Jimbo Quality has just about finished sweeping the fireworks out of the Herald offices so expect the announcements shortly.
