Op/Ed: New ‘Corporate SL’ – Ominous Sign of Things to Come?

Losing faith in Second Life

by d3adlyc0d3c, ex-griefer

I was recently banned from Second Life (again) where I had an account as Adromor Wierwight for a period of 3 months. During this time I established a company called ‘Pomilio Enterprises’ where I saw some success as an SL business person raking in over 34k Lindens in the first month of operation without paying a single dime out of pocket. When I was banned I had four stores across the grid and had all of my products listed on OnRez and Apez.

I made some friends of former enemies, established valuable business contacts, befriended employees of Linden Lab and of course made a few new enemies. A few weeks ago that ended when Harry Linden was assigned the task of processing a frivolous AR that had been filed on me. When he discovered my identity (presumably from chat logs on the server) I was immediately perma-banned.

I had correspondence with some LL executives and I promised that as much as I hated this I would keep secret some of the controversial things that happened during my short time as ‘CEO’ of ‘Pomilio Enterprises’ and that I wouldn’t be bothering to return to SL after having spent so much time developing my inventory just to be banned as soon as business began picking up. I promised them this and I pleaded for them to listen to reason to prevent the stagnation of this platform.

I still feel a bit nostalgic when I read the Herald or think about SL. I like Second Life a lot but I hate what is happening here. I have heard the cries of the ‘end is near’ for a good while now and never paid them much attention. I had always thought that it was coming from people who just didn’t understand how complex a platform like Second Life would be to perfect.

Since then I have been noticing a new trend where LL has become increasingly bold, ignoring the outrage of it’s residents and further alienating them. They seem intent on assuring their own destruction by driving away their most loyal user base. It is such a shame that they are ruining something that could be so great.

Complex social structures have sprung forth where there are cliques, gangs, businesses and so much networking. Many of the hardcore users are much more emotionally involved than in any other virtual world there is to date. I often found myself wondering if one day people would write books about the things people did in Second Life. The platform has only been around a short time and already it has such an interesting history. I would love to see SL progress to this point but I am finally seeing what others have already been seeing.

So much potential, wasted

Since the Lab doesn’t seem to have a problem with destroying itself and pissing off millions of users, I figured why not help them achieve their apparent goal? So here I am, I’m breaking one of my two promises today. Today I’m going to have my say about the Lab and it’s shenanigans. Today I finally get critical.

The emergence of ‘trademark guidelines’ was a source for irritation for me as a Herald contributor and a friend to a few other contributors. I still refused to speak out. I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was the announcement of LL’s unveiling of the new ‘Corporate SL’.

When LL announced this I remembered a conversation I had with one ‘Logger Sewell’ one day as Adromor Wierwight where he told me that he knew for a fact that LL was only letting the public ‘beta test’ Second Life and that once it became stable it would be marketed exclusively to real world business. He claimed it would be used for intra-company communications and training sessions, educational institutions and inter-business networking, all for an exorbitant monthly fee of course. At the time I brushed him off thinking that he was only being paranoid. I just couldn’t see any evidence that this was true.

The more I have considered it, the more logical it seems. SL could be the perfect business tool. Business people can conduct meetings and network, they can transfer funds and make deals with each other all within this platform. Established companies usually have more money than the average person so marketing to businesses seems like a good idea. I marketed my products to businesses in SL as Adromor Wierwight and that worked pretty well for me.

Skeptics will of course argue that the free instant messaging programs such as YIM, MSN or AIM offer any of the features businesses would need for networking. If that was really the case though people would be on MSN chatting, cybering, pretending they’re in clubs or going shopping and most of the other crap people do in SL. Graphics play a huge part in a program’s marketability. Appearance is the selling point. Combining appearance and functionality makes for a winner. It appears that LL might just be testing those waters right now and if they feel that they can profit more off of real world businesses SL as we know it could disappear.

The unveiling of this new Corporate SL could mean that the time is very close where LL will close shop on the public. Their blatant disregard for their customers feelings may also signal their intent. It only makes sense if they aren’t planning on keeping you around for them to ignore you. In fact it seems like that’s the ONLY reasonable explanation for what they’re doing. The TOS makes it clear that if and when that day comes, LL can keep all of your ‘Linden Dollars’ and your content and tier and the money you paid for uploading images. This may or may not hold up in court but it seems reasonable to expect them to rip everyone off before they shut them out based on what they’re doing now.

A good friend of mine has referred to Philip Linden as ‘The Prince of Lies’ ever since I met her. I didn’t usually agree with her. Hell, even LL employees who I have spoken to vigorously defended him. Most employees resent their bosses because they often feel underpaid or under appreciated among many other things and the fact that this appeared not to be the case at LL put to rest any concerns that I had. My views have slowly shifted as of late.

I am beginning to see the same Linden Lab my friend does. Her views are becoming more widespread and I can no longer ignore it. They can’t all be wrong, there’s just too many people who are noticing teh Lab’s change in direction. They’ve been noticing it for awhile before I caught on here recently.

Just a few prophetic words of warning from your friendly neighborhood d3adlyc0d3c — watch out, something funny is going on at the Lab and it doesn’t seem to bode well for people who are investing money in this platform. Assess the risks, keep close tabs on LL’s blog and then decide for yourselves – you’ll see the signs soon, too

You’re half-right. There will be a corporate grid, with every corporation sitting happily behind their firewall and meeting somewhere in the Linden middle-ground.

But even Linden, clueless and flailing as they are right now, know that there is no need to shutdown a grid that’s already making them money – they can have BOTH. Their apparent determination to avoid taking any responsibility whatsoever for content is a legal position – they hide behind the legal slack cut for ISP’s, making them immune from prosecution for any illegal content carried on their networks.

The only fly in it might be that Linden are not really an ISP and it’ll be interesting to see if this ever gets challenged legally. In the meantime they cannot shift from their current position, even slightly, or they’d face a barrage of legal cases and wouldn’t survive the onslaught. They’re kings of a ‘thiefdom’ because they have to be – they can control individuals access to SL (sound familiar?) but have to be very careful of editing content for fear of looking like they’ll take some overall responsibility for it. They’ll support any DMCA but they will never issue them…and we all need to get used to that, that’s really what their recent blog post was saying.

I had written almost the same feelings on lindens blog this past week when the site was really just not worth continuing. When I went back to the blog to read other post they had removed all of them and also left an explanation to people asking “Why were my comments deleted?” making everying out to be whinners when they had a right to be whinning. Ive actually been weaning myself away from SL. I did however watch the Congressional hearing and I watched the whole thing. Now Im not sure if Philip Rosedale was sworn in or not lol or even if this matters. But when he was asked a question by one ot the committee members if he had any knowledge if any of our present Presidential Candidates had a presence in Second Life he said pretty much “NO” he wasnt aware of any now if im not mistaken I was on Clintons Campaign sim along time ago. Not to mention the fraud that may or may not have been detected. We all know that people have been running off with large sums of money from SL. He stated that they keep track of transactions for 10 weeks. And that a red flag can go up. well what do they do hold the red flag up and then hold up the green one after to pass because of hell of allot of funds have been taken from a lot of residents silly enough to invest or bank on SL. i can not be most certain although wether or not the funds were taken out or just moved around SL and used by other alts..but the point Im making is that Linden Labs absolutly had knowledge of this baloney going on and they also had to of know lol that Clinton had a huge following in SL Because there was a group formed and arnt all groups paid for? 100 Lindens so thats documented and also her face was plastered all over the place and articles written about her international followers. and her avatar was created by a well known avatar shape creater. Unless Philip is living under a rock with his pot of gold tucked in between his legs and not looking Id say he um lied to these committee members who directed those two questions to him right? they did touch upon money laundering and all was honky dory lol.But like I said im not sure if he was sworn in or if it was a truely a legal issue it was just a hey whats up with you guys Linden Labs and IBM because the IRS is a wee bit interested in your multi-billion $$$ venture here. But wasnt Roger Clemens just asked questions along with his x-trainer there in the same hot seat about wether or not Clemens used performance enhancement drugs and later accused of perjury? I dont know if anything became of it but just kind of caught me by surprise watching and listening to the hearing. These two links are interesting to read about some of the concerns the IRS has about the marriage of the two. so it isnt a small thing..its a major one. How many employees again does linden Labs have? A few hundred? What r they more concerned about? Wouldnt you have all your companies concentration be on the big prize? Well my point here is I dont think SL will go away but will stink for some time and Im really glad spring is here and I will be charmed away by the lovely weather. Oh found the image of the Hillary Clinton 2008 SL Campaign sim it was taken April 17th 2007. on the sim Platon lol and do a search lol her avatar appears in the search and she joined lets see 4/12/2006 lol and she belongs to two groups. But it show its the “Unofficial AV” of the Hillary Clinton. I do know also that Obama also has been planning a presence to on SL from someone thats in SL that helps with his campaign and We do know that there is a John McCain that was born 2/23/07. So well yeah they were here. You cant tell me he didnt know this. So as far as trusting anything from his mouth or from LL’s employees. Uh uh so i will move on with my RL i do like and not take SL to serious anymore. Iv seen the light hehehe…Have to say I did develope some wonderfull friendships Ive even taken to the rl level as friends and some who I most likely wont be able to see we will correspond over the internet to retain our friendship. There were some really positive things that came out of SL for me. Yes LL provided me that vehicle but I drove it. Thank you Linden Labs for that opportunity and business is business I understand. But hold on residents its going to be a bumpy ride for some time. your not the focus of attention. they have thier work cut out for them. Take a look at these links if you havent seen them yet theres some good information and insight as to whats really going on. Forgive the typo’s or grammer I wrote this with a horror movie playing in the background oh god lol…

Glad you are back on SLH. So, if I can ask, what exactly is the official reason for the original permaban…what was the final PN straw that crossed the line back then? If the permaban was unjust in your case, how should LL “punish” TOS violators? I know you have admitted to have caused grid closures so what should they have done to you as punishment? Personally, I think LL should eliminate permabans . They should instead do away with free accounts OR require TOS offenders to pay fines in order to keep their account.

As to your article… I think there is room for both . LL closing the grid to the public seems too far-fetched. How valuable can a corporate virtual platform be? I think LL would lose money by trying to make this platform relevant only to big business. A conference call is still more efficent than a virtual meeting. Yes, LL is trying to market SL to businesses as a tool if they desire it, however LL is not naieve (sp?) enough to think virtual worlds will dominate all of the business world.

d3adlyc0d3c,in order for your argument to work, the value of virtual worlds for corporations has to be VERY high in order for LL to not need all of us currently in it. Give some more examples of how a corporate only grid could be more profitable for LL. I do not see SL being all that useful or efficient for many busineeses to even care about. A corporate/public mix seems more logical as it provides recreation, friendships , learning, and creativity for the business folk to enjoy.

Before we start tolling The Bell of Ominous Foreboding, it might be worth considering that the recent shifts of power and emphasis at Linden Lab (TM) might turn out to be a good thing. To shift from basically an entrepreneurial enterprise to a small/med cap company that could be the subject of an IPO will require some attention to long-term investment. Part of this will indeed come from businesses in SL and the new CEO – whoever that might be – will surely be savvy enough to work this out. Sometimes becoming more “corporate” is beneficial to a company. The mantra “Corporate is Bad” that some folks like to use (and it didn’t come up here so that’s good) is an over-generalization. With a good CEO, we could see positive changes, not necessarily negative.

Oh, and I don’t know any Lindens, don’t know anyone who knows any Lindens, and don’t get paid by any Lindens. Just a point of disclosure ;)

yeah this “person” is still in SL and he openly admitted being the hacker and even provided screenshots of how he did it using an alt.

how can LL say there going corp when they keep assholes like hackers, content theives and countless other illeagal things and they have the ball’s to band people that are doing LEGIT HONEST BUISNESS, talk about being fucking hypocrits

IRL I work with SMB and Enterprise class companies in designing and implementing technology solutions in their infrastructure.

I’m on the sales end of the spectrum, so I meet and speak with a lot of the decision makers that help guide technology decisions in their organizations. I find it highly unlikely that LL would be aiming towards a ‘business only’ grid while putting the rest of us ‘hobbyists’ to sleep.

The fact is, SL isn’t as reliable (and certainly not as secure) as many technologies out there already. Its doubtful any larger business would run headlong to adopt SL as a standard for training and communications when there are currently MANY better tested and trusted solutions.

I do have to say too that, while I can’t intelligently comment on your motivations for sounding the alarm, it DOES smack of ‘sour grapes’. Permabanned so now performing your civic duty to warn the rest of us that ‘the British are coming’?

    “that’s really not that much”

anon’s argument is not logical. So, the PN group earned more in 2 months than Cod3c earned in his first month in business…so anon is implying he was not successful? I think anyone who earns lindens regardless of the amount is a success. If the amount is 100L, 34k ,or 500k in a month, each has earned it and is a success…it is all relative.

  14. d3adlyc0d3c

“codec in the first two months of PN we raised that much with a loli tip jar on fort longcat (where we subsequently lost it to intBlubber)

    that’s really not that much”

Except I did it in the first month (instead of two) and on my own (without a dozen plus friends camping and filling out surveys or whatever) selling many of my products for under 100 lindens. I made over 160 sales in that first month which is actually pretty good considering that I had just barely set up shop.
If you still think you can make 34k in one month in a tipjar by yourself then by all means create an alt, login and see. I guarantee you won’t make that much in 6 months or possibly even a year from a tipjar. You should also consider the times. Consider the fact that SL’s economy has been suffering as of late and that many established merchants on SLX were complaining that they weren’t making many sales at all.

“So your pissed at LL because they banned your account when you were perma-banned from SL (as per their policy) and now your breaking this amazing news that LL is going for a market behind corporate firewalls, when its been publicly announced already?”

I was banned over a month ago, mr. fanboi. Also this is called an op/ed meaning it is an editorial and opinion. This means it’s not a ‘news’ article.
Writing it had absolutely nothing to do with my most recent banning. It is implied clearly in the article why it was written. Linden Lab’s has been making stupid decisions like with their ‘trademark guidelines’ and this corporate SL crap a lot lately. Logger Sewell claimed he had inside information and at the time, like you, I didn’t want to believe it either. It seems more plausible now based on current events and the fact that the lab is ignoring it’s loyal user base’s pleas.

FYI I don’t consider LL’s price cuts to be among these bad moves as this is exactly the type of tactic I recommended in my last op/ed, despite the fact that it does clearly inconvenience a lot of people who already owned land.

    Razrcut:

I admit I can’t answer many of your questions because I just don’t know the answer. I think what was interesting to me is that Logger Sewell claimed he had inside info and told me about this ‘Corporate SL’ months before LL announced it to the public and before anyone else (that I know of) had any way of knowing about it.
Taking into account the lab’s neglect towards its customers combined with the fact that Mr. Sewell’s seemingly wild claims have already come partially true leads me to believe that there is something that I am missing. I believe what he told me now.

Oh and I can’t even remember what I was first permabanned for but Socrates Linden told me I was banned for ‘Global Attacks’ which may mean I was permabanned the first time for crashing the grid when I had first joined the PN (interestingly enough I was actually shunned for about a week until this point but then was suddenly ‘top dawg’ for crashing the grid. Until that point only mootykips had really stood by me).
In any case I am certain that the permaban was warranted.

Your name and introduction made you look like a script kiddie, Codec. You seemed like an idiot.

BTW, 34k is like 113 bucks. Not bad for a hobby, I guess, but it didn’t do you any good, anyway. I think the point of anon’s comment was that they made almost as much money as you with next to no effort. I mean, it was a damned tip jar.

SL would be a shitty format for a business anyway, unless they could hold a virtual holo-slideshow complete with high-quality imported 3D graphics from any given software platform that a company has used for designing their products or processes. It doesn’t seem like SL would even begin to measure up to businesspeople meeting up at a conference or for a small meeting. The only way SL could be an advantage over real life would be if it would cut travel costs while still allowing efficient control over a meeting space with a simple, useful interface.

Currently, I would SL fails all of those criteria.

Walking around is annoying, unresponsive, and unless you have a high end computer, it will be even harder to navigate due to a low framerate. The best system SL has for importing custom 3D objects is the relatively new ‘sculpted prim,’ which is definitely not a good analog to a high-quality 3D rendering of a detailed design or CAD or the like. Voice chat in SL seems to be based on IRL voice distance, which is really stupid because space in SL seems very shrunken. Even a building with a 10m ceiling seems kind of small, yet the average two story house is probably about that tall. Communication, collaboration, and demonstration for real world stuff are all highly constricted in SL, so how could it possibly be productive for real matters?

And there’s no reason LL couldn’t have two grids. Their lack of response to people is probably because most people in SL complain about pointless shit like their neighbors snooping on them with their cameras, so they have to sift through thoudands of idiots and invariably drop the ball.

Plus, you know that they favor owners of private islands. I doubt you fell into that category.

SL will remain a virtual hangout and will continue to turn normal people into paranoid idiots who freak out at the slightest hint of conspiracy. The sexual deviants will continue to deviate sexually. The Lindens will ignore you during their yiff sessions. Philip will continue to play dumb, or actually be as dense as Prokofy is insane. The PN will continue dropping lulzturtle bombs. Oh, and don’t worry, we’ll still use your weapons, after we fix the OVER 9000 bugs and failure points you were too stupid to remove.

I fully agree on what d3adlyc0d3c just blogged here ! Despite the others who are still not awake, SL brings people into a state of coma, I would even say a kind of a sect where ya are being ripped of without realizing you are being ripped of ! The weak mental state of the average second lifer is the feeding ground for LINDEN LABS, the weak feed the strong ones ! It gets so wrong that most second lifers dont understand the difference anymore between RL and SL …. lmao …. rofl …. and yes this is what LINDEN likes .. getting people addicted, guess in the boardroom they are laughing there asses off everyday to see all the misery caused by this stupid software, while they are heading with there cruise ships to the right target in time !

We are only good enough to pump in money to pay there operational costs while they are developing there final goal, to develop a mainframe where only
businesses are going to be in allowed ! But hell, can ya now imagine that a software program is constantly being tuned running there CORE users mad every day with an increasing trend ! Can u imagine driving youre RL car knowing that the engine is still under developement and that the car breaks down every day or has to go back to service every day ! …….. it sucks !

look how they lowered the island prices from 1695 US$ to 1000 US$, this is laughing with ya fix customer base, most of the island owners including myself are not here for masses of profit but just trying to have a breakeven point and enjoying the flexibility to built and experiment at the same time. There was anyhow announced last year that the island rates would only go up, thats why a lot of people i know were buying more and more islands to be a step ahead of this FALSE announcement !

I leave SL and going to help revolting against SECOND LIFE in all its aspects, the sooner this whole thing is brought down and eliminated the less chance LINDEN is going to have to reach there final goal, and that is what we all should do, bad publicity will offhold companies to participate !

for the unbelievers, please read the blogs on the official website, it sucks it sucks it sucks !!!!!

Isn’t it interesting how idiots from the PN are the only ones trying to discount that 34k linden shit? Idiots who really wouldn’t know the first thing about making money in Second Life because they can’t focus for longer than two seconds on anything that doesn’t have the word ‘lulz’ in it combined with pictures of naked men which may or may not be completely covered in bodily fluids.

Recently I read a chat log that a reporter had made during an interview with a PN. It was rather long and rambling with a lot of “LULZ” and some “Over9000′s” and a few “Unlimited FAILs” in it, but the most memorable sound byte coming from him, came towards the end of the rant when he was asked to summarize why they like to take it to some LULZ worthy candidates (grief certain sims). His answer was: “We trade Linden Greed for Red Sims…”. It rattles around inside of your brain… “We trade Linden Greed for Red Sims…” I guess it’s no wonder why LL wanted to push havok4 in really REALLY fast. The PN must have been neutralizing a lot of Linden Greed. They might have a lot left to neutralize too.

DARMOK AND JALAD AT TANAGRA was a tale told to Startrek’s Picard by an alien that he met on a strange planet. Picard had to tell his host a tale in return that night. Picard’s tale was about “Gilgamesh and Enkidu at Uruk”. Somebody in this thread has been giving us hints by referencing this I think. VERY STRANGE. Below is Picard’s story. If you were to substitute the PN for “Gilgamesh” in that story, and DeadlyCodec for “Enkidu”, and Second Life for “Uruk”, then these hints we have been getting in this thread might actually make some kind of surreal sense. To whit, Picard’s story:

    GILGAMESH AND ENKIDU AT URUK:
Gilgamesh, a king. Gilgamesh, a king. At Uruk. He tormented his subjects. He made them angry. They cried out aloud, “Send us a companion for our king! Spare us from his madness!” Enkidu, a wild man from the forest, entered the city. They fought in the temple. They fought in the street. Gilgamesh defeated Enkidu. They became great friends. Gilgamesh and Enkidu, at Uruk. The new friends went out into the desert together, where the Great Bull of Heaven was killing men by the hundreds. Enkidu caught the Bull by the tail; Gilgamesh struck him with his sword. Killed him. They were victorious. But Enkidu fell to the ground, struck down by the gods (Lindens). And Gilgamesh wept bitter tears, saying, “He who was my companion through adventure and hardship, is gone forever …”

Good god Machinecode, you really turned into an internet tough guy didn’t you? Why don’t you tell us what you could have possibly done that has convinced you that you are so much better than anyone else? Your comments in regards to my weapons are laughable. I still check out the PN wiki and you haven’t really done anything at all. You also have yet to even specify a bug that was in my code. This leads me to believe that you just simply fail at building weapons with fullproof instructions (say, that’s a familiar phrase, isn’t it?).

It’s true that PN scripting has evolved as time has gone by and people have learned to make scripts more efficient to keep from having to copypasta 7 or 8 scripts for one single weapon. It’s also true that back when I was in the PN I was still ahead of each and every one of you while you followed me around praising me while holding on to my shirt tail. I can still out script you today.
You should really get humble now. Your posts are a prime example of why the PN sucks so badly now. PN aren’t supposed to be SRS BSNS bullies, they’re supposed to be pranksters. Clearly you didn’t get the memo.
It’s sad that there are like 4 or 5 loudmouths in there that make the whole group look bad. If I was ^ban^ I would permaban each and everyone of you for overdosing on stupid.

Yeah, I’ve been lazy. I’m working on something. I helped fix lolibawls. This website is stupid. That is all.
