It’s Official, we cannot be Supporting Second Life after Today

Back in early May 2007, we thought about blogging to let you know that we were seriously considering whether Linden Lab would ever fix Second Life. It was easy to blow off the old Mac users but some new Macbook Pro users were even whinging about crashing every 20 minutes.

We thought about it, but our tracking shows that we are unlikely to ever fix this and with SL losing market share it really makes little sense for us to continue the charade. The vast majority of responses from you confirmed that you agree, it makes sense to free up the Linden engineers from working to support Second Life since it is used by so few Residents, and instead we should let them move on to other work which will benefit a much larger group.

We wanted to make sure there was plenty of time for the news to spread, and now, a little over two months later, it’s time to actually cease support of this relatively little-used virtual world.

What does it mean to “stop support”? Basically, it means we stop new development for the SDK (software development kit ), and also stop doing QA testing. It has been this way for years –will anyone really notice a difference?

What if you do notice? If you are one of the few logging into Second Life, you can still do so today, even though we are officially now not supporting it — and that may be true for some time.

Exactly how long we can’t guarantee, because Linden engineers will no longer be testing to make sure that new releases will work. So, eventually, there may be a time when some new element will interfere significantly enough to result in folks who will not be able to log in. At that time such folks would need to upgrade their metaverse provider.

What if you plan to keep using Second Life? We will continue to give reasonable notice, to be clear, and stick with new Second Life versions, as new versions will continue to be released and improved or not supported.

    Wow.
SLH are trying “irony” now. And I thought Americans didn’t “get” irony.
    Opps, You still don’t…Fail…Next!!

So the Lindens are tired of supporting Mac users on an old and unpopular operating system, who probably make up about 0.01% of users.

What exactly is the surprise here? Mac users are generally lucky if they get any support for more than a tiny, tiny fraction of all the software on the market, let alone for a little-used OS that nobody really gives a shit about anymore.

This article is written in a satirical form that suggests the Lindens are bunch of assholes for doing this – and while I would agree that the Lindens are indeed a bunch of assholes, how or way you expect them to continue coding SL for a little-used, old version of MAC OS, I do not know.

And the last two paragraphs? Holy shit, upgrade old machines and update your software?? How OUTRAGEOUS. Technology marches on, but you can’t be bothered to fork over the cash to keep up, so the rest of the world should slow down for you?

    How about ‘No’.

This is obviously a response to “It’s Official, we will Not be Supporting OS 10.3 “Panther” after Today”.

So, guys, don’t worry about it: it’s just the kind of tirade you’d expect from an Apple fanboy.

This article is quite pathetic. If you want to write about the lack of support for Mac then write about the lack of support for Mac. At least then readers could tell if you had anything interesting to say on the subject. This sort of satire starts from the assumed position that everyone agrees with you, when you haven’t even bothered to make an argument. Lazy journalism without even the virtue of being funny.

    I AM OUTRAGED.

SL won’t run on my system, running DOS 6.2 with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. OUTRAGED, I tell ya.

And why the fuck isn’t there a version for CP/M or IRIX?

The satire here has gone into a depressing level of vitriolic attitude. If SL is that bad to the herald people then perhaps the herald should just close and get a real life. I’m not saying this in a mean or nasty manner. I’m serious. I click the herald bookmark less and less because it is so negative.

This sort of thing is irresponsible – if I’d have read it as a noob I would have believed it and may well have thought I wouldn’t bother with SL any longer… lets face it life as a noob is difficult and puzzling enough already.

The SLH need to realise that its in all of our interests to keep a positive vibe going – this sort of thing will only fuel the ‘sky’s falling in’ brigade. Shame on you.

That’s actually quite funny, as I click the herald bookmark more and more because it is so negative…

“let alone for a little-used OS that nobody really gives a shit about anymore”

Get a clue, sweetie. Mac usage keeps climbing. Yes, it’s a paltry 8.5% of the market now, but that’s a huge increase over where it was two years ago, and it’s not stopping. Windows users are going the way of white people — in fifteen years, YOU’LL be the minority. Then we’ll see how you like it . . . .

@Jumpman: I don’t know whether to thank you or debate you. Were you complimenting me or trying to insult me? Writing in complete sentences normally helps people understand what you’re trying to say.

Missy, Dearie? How about YOU get a ‘clue’ – and perhaps some actual reading COMPREHENSION?

When someone says “OS” they are talking about the OPERATING SYSTEM – OS stands for Operating System – not the type of computer.

As such it would behoove you to actually READ the Linden Blog post concerning the ‘Panther’ OS – they have stated that the number of Second Life users actually ON ‘Panther’ has declined to the point where supporting it is no longer needed. They did the right thing there.

If you are using ‘Panther’ – get a new Mac or find a way to update your system.

As for PC users becoming a Minority? Sorry – the Mac is only viable as an Art/Music/Photo editing platform. It is – and has always been – all but useless for everything else on the market.

By the by – those of you slapping Intel chips into your Macs and/or running Windows or a clone on a Mac? Nice job there – all you have done is slap an Apple sticker on a Windows Machine/Normal PC.

Mac users are funny aren’t they? I always wondered who in their right mind would opt into buying a queer closed system like macintosh. Immature? Gullible? Appliance operators? Yeah of course, but even some Tree Swingers too? Who would have thought? hurr durr uuggum boogum…

Jumpman, I think someone may have asked you this before but is English your first language? I’m not sure whether you have a legitimate second-language issue or if you’re trying to affect some sort of quasi-street patios based on a cross between Jar Jar Binks and the Elephant Man.

I apologize if English is NOT your first language and appreciate you taking the time to learn a second language. However, if English IS your first language, I recommend grabbing hold of a dictionary and using a spell checker occasionally. This will dramatically improve the readability of your posts and make it easier for us all to try and work out just what the hell you’re talking about.

“…Sorry – the Mac is only viable as an Art/Music/Photo editing platform. It is – and has always been – all but useless for everything else on the market.”

The saddest part is a PC can do Art/Music/Photo editing better than a Mac anyways, and for less cost.
