Moggs Oceanlane — Post 6 Grrrl

by Alphaville Herald on 26/08/08 at 8:00 pm

[Miss Oceanlane is one of the busy bees in SL, I knew her name from flickr and several other social networking facilities. All I knew about her person was that she's one of the smarty-pants, a girl known for her wits, and so I was more than surprised when rumours spread that she was interested in becoming a Post 6 Grrrl. Of course, I was more than delighted when she said that those rumours were true and immediately fixed an appointment with her. She provided me with all her contact data and the pics of some outfits she had chosen for our photo shoot – a professional approach I more than appreciate. All I had to do was choosing the right location and I think I found it in La Reve, a sim worth visiting. - Bunny Brickworks]

My second life, like my first is driven by my inate curiosity and love of people. Like my real world the people I associate with in world are quite a diverse bunch with mixed interests and talents. I’m mostly playful – though sometimes amusingly serious – I tend to juggle a number of tasks and people at once and am often seen roaming around on my own and muttering to myself.

My curiosity has me meeting interesting people, reading every notecard that comes my way, exploring sims, playing with gadgets and in-world tools, sharing ideas and having great adventures along the world. I am constantly in awe of my fellow residents for their creativity, kindness and points of view. There are so many amazing people in this space that my eyes are constantly opened in wonder while my hands clap in delight.

I’ve happily explored most aspects of second life – I see it as a playground, a community, an educational/business tool, a place to express creativity and a great space to meet people. Initially, my friends list consisted only of people I had met in world, however now it includes both of my RL sisters, several work colleagues and several RL friends who have ventured into Second Life for fun, work or both. I joyously mix my people with reckless abandon – I fail at compartmentalisation.

I initially ventured into SL in 2005, leading a motley expedition of friends, family and work mates (this initial foray was inspired by the book Snow Crash). My connection/computer wasn’t up to it so once the frustration got the better of me, I didn’t come back until 2007. Within one week of my return I look pretty much as I do today and I’d developed an addiction to Insolence lingerie. Within two weeks I had land. Within a month or two a space my sister had joined and we were both all over the place, learning and exploring and bouncing ideas off one another and helping out newbies. Today, we provide the Eloquence Lounge for newbies and homeless residents to use as a home base and it includes the basic things we wished we’d had access to as newbs. We have plans to reinstate a few things but until they happen… I’m not sharing! *grins*

I don’t see Second Life as a closed environment – I use a range of social networking sites to communicate and share ideas and silliness other residents. I have played briefly with SLoodle – a tool that links with the online learning tool, moodle and have ventured into Open Sims for a look. I am a moderator of the SL Tourist Board Flickr group, which is a great starting point for exploring second life – descriptions of every picture contain a SLURL. I also have a very serious Plurk addiction (which any number of residents will confirm!).

I don’t have a desire to become partnered in Second Life – not because I think that it’s silly but because people’ emotions are often real even if the environment is a virtual one and I see that as being a road full of complexity and pit holes that would possibly do my head in. I don’t think I’m cut out for it. I am intrigued by those who manage to have successful second life relationships – whether they remain in second life; cross over into real life — or are in addition to real life relationships. I give great friendship and adore those whom I choose to spend time with in world. My manifesto when it comes to my interactions and friendships with people in both worlds is, ‘don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts and don’t put up with whose who are reckless with yours’ (borrowed from the sunscreen song/Kurt Vonnegut).

Second Life is not a space for spectators – to get anything out of second life you need to immerse yourself… and once you do that I think it’s very hard not to learn something new about yourself or other people. At times my experiences in second life have challenged my thinking in many other ways I’m constantly amused at just how much my second life has in common with my real life.

While I recognise that some people have had bad experiences and interactions in Second Life, it again seems to reflect my real world – I am a spoiled brat who is fortunate to be surrounded by people whom I adore and who accept and love me for who I am.

Moggs is one of the bright stars of SL and plurk and other “metaversish” networks! She was one of the first kind souls I met in SL, and will always be my treasured friend and “gad-about” gal pal! Like many others, I am in awe of her constant motion, activity, and yet she has the ability to balance it with a robust professional workllife and healthy RL personal life.

Thanks for showcasing this phenomenal woman!

I only know Moggs for a short time – we met on Plurk and a few days later she systematically subscribed to all my Web 2.0 feeds out there: Twitter, Flickr, FriendFeed, whatever… all of them. I asked her if she intends to cyberstalk me – and from there on friendship developed. Moggs is smart, Moggs is flirtacious, Moggs is geeky, Moggs is intellectual, Moggs is honest, Moggs is playful, Moggs has a distinctive appearance and a good taste in clothing. I would not want to miss her as a friend.

Thanks mate for being in SL!

@ Moggs – Very nicely written. I share many of your feelings and points of view.

@ Bunny – I love the pictures, and especially the last one, the wings and the tattoo make her look like a fairy, but most importantly the background you used makes an excellent complement to it. Great job.

I couldn’t get passed the first picture, and never read. She has that glazed over look or being needled with morphine or whatever drug makes you that way…creepy.
