Rotten Core names Ex Laks as pyromania-prone accomplice
Pastor Samuele Shepherd vows “No matter what other form of attacks come…this church will not be moved”
by Sigmund Leominster
Pastor Samuele Shepherd In Flames During Attack
On Sunday November 30th, Pastor Samuele Shepherd was in the middle of his Sunday service at the Overcomers Church when a group of people entered. Within minutes, a fire prim was burning at the altar and Pastor Sam was surrounded in flames while being face-to-face with a demonic avatar.
Church attendee, Mahala Bing, explained what she witnessed.
“They barged inside and went straight to Pastor Sam as if they’d already planned to ruin that night’s service. One person, Delmore Oh, was disguised as a clown or something similar with horns, and he had a flag with some nasty signs or logo. He went behind Pastor Sam, up to the stage, then on to the podium and started mocking the pastor. Waving his hand, he rezzed a cross and somehow had a dummy avatar and it was in the cross. I think they were trying to mimic or mock the pastor being crucified and with that devil-looking avatar welcoming the pastor to hell.
“Another person, Rotten Core, disguised as a devil with horns and body somehow hugged the Pastor to prevent him from moving, and yet another avatar, named Ex Laks, managed to rez a scripted object that emitted fire. We were all in shocked and I was in a frozen state when I saw the event unfolding. It literally gave me chills as to what was happening. The pastor pleaded with the person in charge of the griefing to stop or be ejected.
“It took us a bit to figure things out because of the commotion. We ejected Rotten Core and Pastor Sam was able to move again. However, every time he moved the scripted object moved with him, which caused the fire to spread. Smoke, thick smoke, overwhelmed the building and even those new visitors that came for the service left because it was hard to see. After we’d ejected/banned those who were responsible for this sad event, the sanctuary had only two members left. Pastor Sam continued on with the service.”
The day after the attack, I contacted Rotten Core to ask him if he would be prepared to comment on a firebomb attack on a church.
“Fire bombed would be a slight exaggeration,” said Core. “We sat in the church and someone rezzed a tiny prim fire near the pastor. Then I stood next to him for three minutes and that was it. Look in my picks; there’s a picture of the incident complete with a quote from one of the insane Christians from the church.”
I asked him to confirm that he didn’t start the fire.
“No, I just stood next to the pastor in a ‘demonic’ avatar. My friend here, who’s with me, now, started the fire. His name is Ex Laks.”
I wanted to know if the event was a planned attack on a targeted church.
“It wasn’t really planned at all,” replied Core. “We just picked a random event to grief. They think my group is some sort of group that was set up specifically to mess with them, when really it’s just a retarded group I made for no reason whatsoever. Well, I mean, we don’t really like Christians too much but we were just goofing around and they’re crazy. I’d like you to include the log from my picks just so people can see how crazy these people are.”
The logged comment he gave me was directed at him by Mahala Bing as her response to the event.
“Great, way to go man! You have proven something tonight that you cannot do in RL; that you had to do what you did tonight in SL and had to come against a man of God because you are not man enough to do it in RL. If you are man enough in RL, why don’t you post what you did and show to the world what kind of person you are, and also post on how you truly look like in RL? Show to the world what this man of God is doing wrong. Unless you’re not a man and want to hide in a devil’s mask. Are you a father in RL? If so, you think your child would’ve approved of what you did or will ever understand? I pray for you my May your soul be lighted once again. In God’s name I pray that whatever it is that has tainted your soul be cleansed tonight. May God bless you my brother, brother.”
I then asked Core to comment on another remark that I’d been given by the church folks; “We were re just shocked as to how they managed to rez and run a scripted object in our sim, since the land is set to no-rezz/build and no scripts allowed to run if you’re not in a group.” Ex Laks offered a response.
“They had no-build set, but I joined their group because it had open registration.”
So the griefers didn’t use any special scripts but simply joined the open group.
Finally, I asked Pastor Shepherd for his comments on the incident and for a little background on the church itself.
“I just believe that God is getting ready to do a great and mighty thing here with the church in SL for us to come under such an attack. The name of our church is Overcomers Church Worldwide and it is open to all races, no matter what color, religion, background, or belief; I believe that God wants to unite his people once again and bring all the churches back together as one. This is a church that will teach and bring wisdom of God’s word to his people.
“We are working on right now to have staff here 24 hours, to help spread his word and too make sure there is always someone here to offer prayer and support to the people of SL. In just two weeks of being open, we have had about 200 visitors here; our numbers during the service is up to around 18-20 at a time. And we have around 30 members of the church now from all over the world. We are also starting this week a Spanish outreach section of the church with one of our members to start going out in the Spanish community and bring them to church and hold meetings for them as well in their language.
“All of the money that goes to pay for the tier of the land is paid right now straight from me and my wife. We are adding a great community here with homes that can be rented to help cover the cost of the sim and keep the church going. It is receiving some donations at this time. People should also know that no matter what other form of attacks come, I or this church will not be moved. God has given me a vision and a calling for his people so I will not let my God down or the people he will have me serve.”

Well I call broadly offensive on this one, and not on the guys who griefed their sim either. I just looked at the good Pastor’s profile and paid a visit to his sim. First off the sim looks n00b as all hell and oops – its on an OpenSpace! Guess that won’t be around for long now will it? Ya think they’re praying to their almighty to save their sim? Probably not, this guy is a member of the Christian Coalition of Second Life! He’s too busy shoving his sociopolitical agenda such as a ban on gay marriage, stem cell research, and all sorts of mindless neanderthal crap down the throats of his dear old mindless flock.
Welcome to Second Life Pastor! Lets see how forgiving the gods of _THIS_ world are when they discover your little sin of abusing your OpenSpace and cast down thy mighty vengeance!

@Devilwears – I’ll say those Reformation guys are nuts! Get a load of their “Code of Conduct”:
At Reformation we embrace a Biblical code of conduct and dress.
When visiting Reformation, especially its houses of worship, we ask that all visitors abide by our code of conduct. See below for our standards:
1. Modest dress by both women and men. “Your adornment must not be merely external–braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. ” 1 Peter 3:3-4. No D/s, BDSM, Gorean or cross-dressing permitted.
2. Chaste behavior, including speech and movement of your avatar. This includes provocative, sensual poses and animations. “…like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;” 1 Peter 1:15
3. No role-playing or dress which is of an evil or dark nature. “Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord. “AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN; And I will welcome you. And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” says the Lord Almighty. ” 2 Corinthians 6:17-18
4. We kindly ask that all visitors remove their wings while visiting Reformation.
5. No “child role play”. Second Life is a place for those over age 18. The suggestive nature of children in an adult environment is not acceptable on this sim.
6. As a Christian sim we entertain all manner of visitors, from atheists to Buddhists. We welcome honest debate conducted with integrity on topics relating to Christianity. We welcome those who embrace error as we know that the truth of God’s Word alone will bring them out of error. We do not, however, tolerate those who would seek to use our sim as a pulpit for proclaiming error. We will not sacrifice Truth for the sake of unity, as that is not unity but conformity.
7. Griefing of any kind, including weapons, nudity or obscenity will result in immediate removal and banning.
Thank you for observing these standards during your stay.

@Caine – One big difference. In the real world you cant just right click the fire and send it back to its owner’s inventory. The only damage done here was emotional or shock valued at best. I’m not saying its okay to go and fire bomb a church in the real world but think about it. This was a symbolic act at best which if anything represented a visit to the pastor and church from Satan. How does this differ from oh, say a group in the real world protesting the funeral of a gay man who was bashed to death with signs that say “God hates fags!”? The real world group did no physical harm, but again it was emotional / shock valued.
Obviously both acts are morally and ethically wrong, but what do you expect to happen when groups like the Christian Coalition both in SL and RL start politicizing their religious beliefs and shoving them down the throats of those who believe the contrary?
I was always taught that religion is something that you keep to yourself, between you, your family, and the other members of your church or organization. If you want to discuss your beliefs with someone that’s fine but keep it civil and in the right place. Never go shoving your ideals down the throats of others and keep politics out of it. Otherwise you start to see crap like this.

@Cai – there’s a difference between role play and holding real church services. Role play is for the purpose of forming a fictional story, these guys are using SL as more of an out of character meeting / social place.
Your name suggests that your character is a Bejoran religious figure in a Trekkie sim? Do you practice the Bejoran religion in the real world and use SL as a meeting place for your followers?
Not all of SL is used for gaming purposes. SL may be based off of video game technologies, but it has uses other then those of a game.

“Harm” isn’t limited to physical harm.
Sure, you can right click the fire and return it, but people can still be upset, and therefore are harmed, to some degree.
Anyway, it’s pretty obvious that you’re a young punk and probably one of the greifers involved.

Actually, Harm IS limited to physical injury, so says the dictionary. Harm isn’t included in physological issues.:
Definitions of harm:
* injury: any physical damage to the body caused by violence or accident or fracture etc.
* damage: the occurrence of a change for the worse
* damage: the act of damaging something or someone
* cause or do harm to; “These pills won’t harm your system”

@Ringness – If you were to re-read my post you would see that while I agree that what they did was wrong both morally and ethically, I can understand why it happened. It was a societal backlash for what groups like this have done in the real world. I merely used the incident at Matthew Shepard’s funeral as an example. For your information I am a 39 year old software developer who works at the local university. I have my place in the real world but like many of us consider SL to be a hobby. If calling me a pasty faced griefer kid with Attention Deficit Disorder while accusing me of being behind the whole thing somehow makes you feel better about yourself then I’m fine with that. I too had that same small, insignificant bump in confidence when I referred to the Pastor’s “mindless flock” in my first post.
But before your own A.D.D. kicks in and you decide to half read mine move on to the next comment consider this. There are far worse ways to grief people on SL and cause real emotional harm then wearing a goofey devil costume and setting out prim fires. I’ll share with you an incident that I was left to handle while administering my own sim.
I had been approached by one of my co-owners about a problem she had been experiencing with one of our players. Apparently she had formed an out of character friendship with this man, but it had somehow gotten out of control. He was claiming that he was an Iraq veteran who suffered from PTSD. She claimed that she was merely offering him a helping hand by listening to his stories and allowing him to vent. Meanwhile this somehow led him to think that the two of them were in love, causing him to latch onto her real life persona through her in-world character. It had gotten to the point where he wanted to meet her outside of SL and was threatening to kill himself if she refused. This incident lasted for weeks during which time I had contacted Linden to no avail and we even went so far as to try and put him in contact with a few SL veteran and depression support groups. Eventually this man just disappeared leaving nothing more then the words “I’m dead.” in his profile description.
I’m sure you can well imagine our conclusions as to what happened to him and it really put all of us through the wringer. Or so I thought. A few weeks later we decided to hold a memorial in the sim for this man that we thought had killed himself. During the event guess who shows up wearing a white prim sheet with a tag over his head reading “I’m Dead!” In the end it turns out that the two – my co-owner and the man were actually boyfriend and girlfriend in real life and decided to play one big huge mind fuck on the rest of us.
Yes, I’d call that emotional harm but in the end you just deal with it. You work it out, rationalize, grow a thicker skin and move on. Bruised emotions and feelings can be mended, but a broken body cannot.

Even though I’m all for religious freedom and freedom of expression, I think they were asking for it. Fundies can not come into SL without expecting to be griefed. SL is not made for the chaste, the faint of heart, the easily offended, or those who want to control others. We’re a very open-minded world, filled with people and furries and everything in between. Unless you’re going to be open to just about every standard of behaviour and dress, you’re going to have rough time here.

Wow, the comments from the religious folks makes them sound even crazyer then most people.
Are you serious with that “One big difference” comment? These were 2 guys that came into a sim with a chuch in it and grifed it. END OF FUCKING STORY.
No one was “attacking” your religion or you personally. It was just 2 guys that just wanted to grif for the fun of it, for themselves. Even though it was not fun for the people that were being girfed, it doesn’t mean you need to start a holy war over it like it seems like your doing on here.

it is one of the few things that can be faithfully and accurately projected into SL
for the simple reason that religion is a 100% mental activity

“Yes, I’d call that emotional harm but in the end you just deal with it. You work it out, rationalize, grow a thicker skin and move on. Bruised emotions and feelings can be mended, but a broken body cannot.”
Look man, your disaffected reaction is what brought about my guesswork. If I was wrong, and you are 39, well that just makes you look even more silly.
I am not saying there was permanent damage done here. Everything has it’s own degree of severity. This wasn’t terribly severe. That doesn’t make it ok, and these guys broke the ToS. It’s that simple. It doesn’t matter what degree the the greifing went to, it’s explicitly forbidden. I should note that I am an atheist, and I have about as low an opinion as one can have regarding religion, yet I still think that it was wrong. I also think it serves to give them more ammo when they start claiming to have been persecuted (in general).
I am a bit tired of the apologists who try to place the onus on the targets, which is exactly what you’ve done. It’s not a desirable personality trait, and I am surprised that at your age you are so aloof about it.
As for the bit from you which I quoted – they were your friends, not strangers – huge difference, and it’s also much easier to get over something when it comes in the form of a practical joke from a friend(s). My father and his best friend played some of the most in depth practical jokes on each other that you can imagine, up to and including my dad wrapping his friend’s entire house in paper one summer and then another time mailing the same friend doctored photographs of him “with another woman”.
That’s OK because among friends, especially those with a history of jerking each others chains, there is an unspoken permission granted, so your example is not really a valid line of reasoning, in this case, and that’s just my opinion, of course.
Greifing in SL is just the handiwork of overgrown kids (and sadly some adults who obviously have social issues) who are products of a declining moral fabric. When we were their age we were more concerned about college, our jobs, getting laid, etc. So I have no sympathy or empathy for the little shits, regardless of the severity of their greifing. Mostly, I blame their parents, because kids are allowed to be kids wayyyy too long these days. I can’t tell you how many of my friends (I am 45 btw) who have adult kids, still at home, well into their 20s, some of who haven’t yet set foot or barely dabble in college and work dead end jobs, if they have jobs at all, which most don’t. Hopefully, one possible silver lining to the economic crunch will be that parents will start leaning on their kids to start taking some responsibility and get their asses doing something more productive than spending endless hours harassing people on the internet.

@ Corona – Thank you for summing up my point to a tee. Sure, fine if they stay to themselves and keep their religion private as it should be then there’s no problem. The same that every other group from Goreans to the blood and gore fetishists do. But going by the tactics used by the Pastor’s real life group as well what they’ve already claimed to be their intentions for coming to SL its obvious whats going to start happening.
How long will it be before these groups start staging protests outside of places like Jenn Villota’s gallery or in the free sex sims claiming that they’re virtual brothels or houses of ill repute? How long before those hanging out in the infohubs start receiving random ims and note cards asking “Have you felt the power of god?” Just wait until they start a campaign to save Gorean souls from burning in the depths of hell for their so called sins.
These are the reasons why I’m so offended by their presence here in SL. I could care less if they were just a group of people sharing prayer time with one another but they’re not. These people are the same ones that politicized their personal religious beliefs in the real world and chances are they’re going to start doing the same here.
@ Voice of Reason – I’m dead serious about my “big difference” comment. The griefer Core was quoted as saying “Well, I mean, we don’t really like Christians too much but we were just goofing around and they’re crazy.” Read between the lines, especially where he says “we don’t really like Christians too much”. That signifies right there what the mindset behind their actions were. Simply put, going by how the “Christians” as he put it have acted in past – ala protesting funerals, etc. they were likely to get a hell of a rise out of them by griefing their service in the way they did. If the Christian Coalition can “grief” people in the real world by protesting a funeral then whats the difference if they’re griefed in a similar way within the virtual world?
I’m not making things up and a simple sit in of a Psych 101 course would show you the logic behind my reasoning.

From the flamers to extremist cults such as the so-called Reformation SL I would exhort everyone not to cause nor to become victims of what has been termed as “Spiritual Abuse”. It is griefing in its ugliest and many who have been victimized by it do not know how to come forward about this, whether it comes from SL or RL. Often the victims of Spiritual Abuse pass on the same to others. Certainly none of this has a place in Second Life. There are better ways to communicate.

That is the man’s opinion. He has an opinion; you have an opinion, everyone has an opinion. Just like how everyone has an asshole. If you actually read PASS what he said about not liking them, you would have seen that he was doing it for lulz.
You have to understand that just because someone in a VIDEO GAME, comes to your video game chunch and uses prims and etc to scraw with you guys, that doesn’t mean it was an attack on YOUR religion.
To make this easy for you to understand: Back in 2004 a image based forum site based off of a japanese one was made. That site was 4chan. For a while, 4chan was like everyother forum on the internet at the time. Until people got the idea to make memes and from there, some people became what you call “/b/” in which is also spawned “anons”.
To stick with topic and not go on about the differents, /b/ people began to do things called “invasion”. An invasion is when a person or a group of people from 4chan or one of the many other chans, goes off and does things to make themselves “lawl” as in to laugh; by mostly doing things that many people look down on. They get great joy out other’s pain and other things.
So, when SL came out, a subgroup of 4chan came to Sl to cause many “lulz”. They formed into the PN and used many of the 4chan memes to grif people.
After the PN had been in SL for a while, random people at random times began to grif sims and other avatars for no other reason then for lulz, as in the case here.
Now here is the thing. These people are not true rasicsts, anti-semites, homophobes, or bigots. They do these things to piss people off for their own enjoy/entertainment. So, do not take what happened so seriously. In RL, these people are normal logic teens and 20 somes that act normal and do things on the net for shits and giggles. Even if it may hurt someone emotionally.
So, you can not take what happens to you in a video game to heart, because it didn’t happen to you in Real life and most likely NEVER will.

this kinda made me laugh, but seriously if you’re getting fire bombed and harassed by avatars, just eject, ban, mute, and return objects that belong to them… you could also make your area no build or group build only, and then make a group for the church and make it invite only, so you don’t have people joining your group just to grief you in the future. don’t be a baby about it. just protect yourself and move on.

He had absolutely no right to do that, even if he doesn’t agree with your views on religion. But honestly… who would have a church in a virtual world?

I wish they would bring the Church of Fursecution back. Man that was something!

This church is very fake I’ve visited and I know the people over it. So what happened to them well no feeling sad for them from me.
