Say It Ain’t So, D3adly — Avatars United Takes A Hit, Yet Again

You don’t hear much of d3adlyc0d3c lately, except on the comment sections of various blogs. You definitely don’t see him in Second Life. Did the deadly disease get the best of him and take his hacking career down? Not really, says D3adly. But he seems to have gotten “less” deadly, that’s for sure.
Explaining that he misses Second Life sometimes, he openly admits that whenever he starts back up again he “really always end[s] up clashing with the wrong people and then going on some sort of stupid griefer rampage.” That doesn’t mean he stopped messing around in the digital playgrounds of the Interwebs. Apparently, Avatars United, with its questionable infrastructure, became one such playground for D3adly.
Avatars United has seen plenty of feedback from d3adlyc0d3c
Back in February, Alphaville Herald had reported on the security holes of this newfangled social networking site for avatars. Some residents even questioned the necessity of such a social networking site, suggesting that since Second Life itself is defined (by the Lindens) to be a community site, this sloppy attempt at improving the experience (not to mention attempt at a likely competition with Facebook) via an insecure and immature AU site is a questionable move at best. Problems? Set aside the fact that we are officially social-networked out (yet another site to log onto!), the anonymity of the site lends itself to impersonation and deception. For instance, there appears to be more Linden employees on the site than in real life. Not your problem? Surely you have heard about the security holes.
After having read our coverage on AU, D3adly, curious to discover some of these vulnerabilities, opened an account and started testing the site to figure out the extent to which the site was insecure. His results are mind-blowing. He confirmed what some of us had suspected for awhile now: the site was seriously insecure.
Having figured out how that the AU system generated security tokens for its users and what these tokens meant, D3adly was able to “forge” requests being sent to the server to generate these tokens and, in doing so, accessed other people’s accounts and applications. While acknowledging that his motivations were merely based on curiosity and a genuine desire to help the Lindens in finding bugs, he says that anyone with questionable intentions could have used the compromised site for malicious purposes.
In addition to injecting HTML IMG tags into a number of AU profiles using the aforementioned bug and forcing a group of users (such as Soft Linden) to send him friend requests, he was able to spoof messages that appeared to come from anyone he wanted, including from FBjork, the AU developer and the founder of Enemy Unknown, and inject messages into other people’s message threads and read private messages between users. I must say, glancing at the samples of private communication between users did not surprise me one bit. But receiving them from someone who made his career out of griefing and crashing sims left me a bit uneasy.
For those who are wondering what D3adly will do with this, rest assured: his malicious days are long gone. He can barely remember his days in the PN or even in Dissention, a three-week griefing group where he and several other folks crashed sims and hacked their way into the Linden network in Facebook to gather information about the LL employees from their profiles for nothing more than maybe sending them flowers — OK, maybe there was a little more intention involved. Instead, he reported several dozen security issues to Soft Linden with the understanding that they will be fixed soon – but not before teasing Plastic Duck.
Responding to an argument that the two had in Facebook, D3adly hacked into Plastic’s profile (who allegedly hates Chans) and modified his AU profile to an image of the Anonymous, and made him shout in his status, “I think I liked the Chans now.” We feel for Plastic. But our concerns are somewhat different. Will the security holes be fixed sooner rather than later? Remains to be seen. As Plastic Duck once said in an interview: “I’ve noticed with Linden Lab telling them to fix something isn’t enough. You need to exploit it to hell and cause half of the SL population to freak out before anything is done.” True, but other relevant questions are: Do we need yet another social networking site? Will AU make the experience of SL better? My guess is, no & not likely. All avatars are already on Facebook anyway.

The reason Plastic hates “chans” is because he’s a Goon from SA. It’s only natural to hate anything 4chan related. Why? Because in the mind of a Goon, /b/tards and their likes lack “originality”. They only shout memes, racial slurs, and over-used grotesque imagery for shock value. Which, I can’t argue with them on that. That is what a /b/tard does 97% of the time.

Bottom line, who cares about a has-been W-hat Goon and a has-been PN/4chan brat with too much time on their hands?

I was hoping that Avatars United would become something like an offline messaging platform for second life. That’s one of the biggest things that is missing. Sending notices and im’s to email really doesn’t cut it and it would be nice to be able to have a place where customers could message you instead of sending a clunky notecard.

Uh, actually it started with you saying “Your mom didn’t make you bareback all of those strangers”, in regards to my AIDS diagnosis on my Facebook wall, where my little sister saw it. She had no prior exposure to that sort of talk, and asked what barebacking meant. You honestly deserved more than a little teasing on AvatarsUnited, much as you try to make it sound like there was more.
And btw, it wasn’t a cross site scripting exploit, dumbass. All your talk like you’re some hotshot security expert, and you still know jack shit about security and vulnerabilities. The friend request bug was called Cross Site Request Forgery (and could have actually been used to take control of other people’s accounts), and attacking security token generation (btw technical details on this bug are present on one of my blogs at blog.parmenidesconsulting.com) falls into attacking session management and possibly broken access controls and business logic errors. In no way did that attack vector even resemble an XSS bug. The tokens I attacked weren’t even cookies sent back in headers from a web browser. They were generated dynamically via Asynchronous Javascript and XML via communications with a server-side script. And the tokens weren’t obtained using any sort of XSS or CSRF attack. They actually required no interaction with third parties whatsoever, just a server-side script responsible for generating them on the fly.
You’re still as big an idiot as ever. Clearly you have about as much as clue about what you’re talking about as you did back in last September when you tried to claim the /gs flag mitigates stack overflows, and went on to just show how ignorant you really are on the whole topic.
And don’t kid yourself, when I have a target in mind and I look closely enough, I ALWAYS find some sort of serious bug (while I have found XSS, I have actually never exploited an XSS bug. Like most, I consider them to be a lesser vulnerability class, and I tend to go for more serious bugs such as SQL injection). Found them in Cox Communications, ID Software, NORML, Dreamhost, AvatarsUnited and numerous other networks. The only place your sorry ass ever found a bug was in Second Life. So no worries, you won’t be discrediting me any time soon.
Anyways, these AU bugs were fixed quite awhile back. They fixed the session management attack, the user impersonation, pm stealing, and the CSRF bugs pretty quickly after I reported them. Linden Lab was very responsive, and I was impressed with how they handled it. They appeared to be making genuine efforts to handle security issues better.

And just so everyone knows, the idiot Patrick Sapinski never even played a role in my motivations for finding bugs in AU. I started looking within 2 days of SLH publishing that AU article. I generally am always looking for a new “project” (ie place to find bugs, learn and experiment) and it just so happened that AvatarsUnited was my project that week. The only motivations I came in with were an interest in network security, the fact that I hadn’t looked at AU before, and the fact that despite the fact that everyone was saying it was insecure, I knew it would be challenging to find anything more than an XSS bug. And it was, very challenging.
They weren’t vulnerable to most of your typical stuff that you’d find in web applications. To find what I found, I had to get really down and dirty with an intercepting proxy to really understand how things worked.
Sapinski was just an afterthought, no matter how badly he wants to try and make it sound differently, doubtless just for the attention.

The PN site hasn’t even been up for like 6 months and I haven’t griefed SL in years.
Maybe you should try to see it from a different perspective. A documentary called “Hacker’s Wanted”, directed by Sam Bozzo and starring Adrian Lamo was just leaked on The Pirate Bay. The movie goes into the philosophy of hacking. Lamo is one of the most well-known former greyhat hackers who penetrated major corp networks such as Microsoft, Excite@home, the New York Times, and Yahoo! News, among numerous others. He HELPED these people fix SERIOUS bugs in those networks, and was ‘thanked’ with a federal indictment in 2003 for the New York times breach (though he only received probation and a hefty fine, I still believe that Lamo should NEVER have been prosecuted for his work, and I will not ever see it any other way).
If you’re really posting comments without an agenda, then maybe you’ll be open to the realization that hacking isn’t about what you think it’s about. The “hackers” that you’re always bitching about, are in many cases harmless, and in some cases, they are responsible for helping YOU, the consumer, indirectly. Without learning about vulnerabilities, how is it you think that people can learn to PROTECT against intrusion?
These AU bugs could have been worse. They could have been worse if I had discovered them back in my heyday, or if the wrong person had discovered them recently. Thankfully, no one was victimized beyond sending a few involuntary friend requests (and a profile image being modified). I call that a win-win situation for everyone.
I believe that the “hackers” you are upset at, are the vandals and the people who are responsible for disrupting your online experience, something which I don’t do anymore. Worse than that, there are some who have been indicted in massive federal investigations for stealing millions of credit card numbers. Albert Gonzalez was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison for stealing more than 160 million credit card numbers.
Mark my words, there will come a day where the feds sincerely wish they hadn’t prosecuted people like Lamo, because old-school hackers with ethics have become increasingly rare.
My only regret is that I didn’t establish myself as a greyhat from the get-go, and because of that, I catch a lot of shit over my interest, even though I have been careful not to cross the line a drew a few years back, anymore. I can’t change that I griefed in Second Life years ago, but I can choose not to do it today.
Rest assured, if I was “defacing” as Patrick tries to suggest, you would be hearing about it, since I have had the ABILITY to deface several high-profile sites and chose not to.

I don’t think there is a decline in the total number of old-school hackers with ethics but rather a decline in percentage.
Apart from that minor point, I fully agree.
Defacements & Co. may be annoying, but its the invisible threat, like organized crime in possession of 0days, I’m losing my sleep over.

You might be right. Most of the communities I found though are chalk full of self-proclaimed hackers that don’t know very much at all! I’ve seen some knowledgeable ones on Binrev and Antilimit. They are on 2600 too, but since 2600 is fairly well known there are also lotsa kiddies too. And Secret Service. I usually just idle in a smaller channel on Antilimit with a mix of whitehats and greyhats. Everyone in there is a hardcore geek, and not really predisposed to annoying kiddie-like behaviors. You should def check it out..

Hmmm~ well I’m not entirely sure what the most useful of posts would be but I can say that the most useless of posts would be an equivalent to SPAM. Going into every conversation and complaining about the exact same thing even when it has nothing to do with them and then giving a response that are practically the same through-out.
My biggest example would be It’s Unfixable who makes the exact same responses in just about every thread.
First Response is usually: “Another thread about PN/WU/W-Hat griffers, puh-leeeeaaase.”
Second Response: “Oh look now it’s a thread all about WU WU WU baaaaaaaaw, puh-leeeeaaaase.”
Third: “Puh-leeeeeeeeaaaase.”
The third and second responses can be switched around.

Also, I would actually say that AU is fairly secure at this point. I really cleaned up house.
But if you find bugs, report them to Soft. And don’t do what I did. I may get into legal trouble over it. I wouldn’t be convicted, mostly because I prob won’t live long enough to be convicted. But they might prosecute anyways.

That said, AU is a joke. It's a spare tire afterthought, Linden Lab just taking potshots at finding new profit centers for their business. They're doing well financially, but it's obviously not the current management's doing, it's because of how well the previous management set the whole thing up. The current cadre of idiots are just in maintenance mode and have no idea what it was that made SL a success in the first place.

@Alyx – I can see where you’d say that – more time is wasted on social networking than any other single thing on the ‘net, even over porn. There are some practical uses for the technology, but it’s mostly as a buffer for machines talking to other machines through Twitter and such.

Well, that’s not a question that is very easy to answer. AIDS just destroys your immune system, then it’s a matter of waiting for something else to kill you. Ultimately, it isn’t AIDS that kills people who die AIDS-related deaths. It’s usually pneumonia or some sort of cancer (AIDS patients are at very high risk for developing certain types of cancer).
It’s difficult to put a timeframe on it because of this, however, as of 4/29/2009 my doctors told me to expect to live for another 12-24 months. Over half of that is gone now, and my cd4 count has been steady at just above 100. I have had some infections, and also some severe nausea (lately, comes in waves and it’s definitely debilitating, so bad I can’t even move at times but when I consume cannabis I don’t notice it), but other than that nothing but weight fluctuation, some skin problems, unusually severe reactions to bug bites (but not life threatening), malaise and fatigue, and some numbness in my fingers and legs (peripheral neuropathy) as well as early stages of AIDS related dementia ie some very mild brain damage causing forgetfulness. I have to take a lot of notes to keep up with things I used to be able to do by memory. It will eventually progress, and there will be a gradual decline in cognitive abilities, judgment, and reasoning.
TL;DR it’s a very long, drawn out and physically and emotionally taxing process.

I don’t consume so much anymore. I have some legal concerns so I’ve needed to try and stay away. Long story short, an old friend and I fell out and they’ve been trying to initiate legal action of varying types for months. The criminal proceedings failed (allegations of assault and harassing communications), and now they’re trying to sue me for libel apparently. And the probable cause hearing I attended in March was super screwy. The order they sent down was NOT what was agreed upon in court. Anyways, naturally, I have expected them to try and use their knowledge that I have used cannabis against me, and the brother/attorney is tight with a lot of the local judges,etc,etc. It’s probably going to get crazy. Right now I just have very sporadic short-term memory loss. I had it occur once in the hospital after a nurse drew blood. I didn’t think she had drawn it yet and had apparently been watching the whole time. I wouldn’t have known I had missed it at all were it not for my mother telling me. Makes me wonder how many things I forget that I don’t remember (I live on my own). Right now I’m still able to function though, so I’m just enjoying it while I can.

Yeah, I wouldn’t have even told a soul about this (except LL’s people) if it weren’t for the major bug being such a golden find. It’s one of those rare gems, the type I always liked reading about in all of these books on network security I’m always poring through. I made sure they had fixed it before I published my writeup on it though.
Normally when I find bugs, I don’t announce them to people. I don’t usually exploit them either. With bugs that you can detect from error messages, it’s easy to confirm the presence of a vulnerability without exploiting it, but in cases like this one, you couldn’t confirm that the bug was there without exploiting it. So you either report tons of POTENTIAL bugs (or none at all), most of which are likely to get ignored after you’ve annoyed the itsec guy with hella spam, or you confirm it before you report it.

BTW if anyone here has any webservers they would like tested for bugs, let me know and I’ll do it for free. But don’t bother me if you don’t own the site you want me to test. I will confirm ownership before I start – you won’t fool me. I don’t care if you were my enemy before, give me a place to hack legally and I won’t bother you or upset your data. I would like written authorization. And I will sign and honor Non-Disclosure Agreements.
If you’re using shared hosting and you don’t actually own the computer on which your site is hosted, I’ll need copies of your web applications to install on my servers for black-box testing after which I’ll follow up with code analysis. I won’t do black-box testing on your hosting company’s server…doesn’t seem like an intelligent thing to do.
