Second Life just gets better and better

Now that Linden Lab has, in the midst of an academic and fiscal year, ended discounts on tier for education and nonprofits in SL, the gnashing of teeth has been so profound that dentists everywhere are eyeing the car lots at BMW dealerships.
This is but one boon to come from exiling the eggheads like me to other grids.

Budgets on the slow-boats called academia and the nonprofit sector are long set. There’s no going back for more cash to fill Philip’s coffers. So, adios, educators and nonprofits!
That said, gentle readers, consider the other benefits for several groups of SLers:
Less Bad Hair: Academics in virtual worlds are even more clueless about fashion sense than they are in real life. Anyone who wears socks with sandals won’t be missed!

Less Chat Lag: Academics & cultural mavens love to flap their lips and they tend to be good typists. Most of my colleagues would sooner plunge steel spikes into their eyes (first choice), or give up tenure (second choice), than to write like most of SL’s mentally retarded blingtards. Thus:

Fewer Noob Avatars Doing Surveys: Students who leave SL as soon as a class ends often plague e-lists, blogs, and in-world gatherings with notecard-bombings (the night before a project is due) begging for survey participants. Now these pests will have to stand on real-life street corners, in the worst parts of town, to find enough perverts and losers to complete a project. Get cracking, kids!
Fewer Crap EDU-Freebies: Techno-commie academics love to give stuff away that Real People would make and sell for whatever the market would bear. And, worse, many educators are like hobbyists who nail two boards together and proclaim themselves carpenters. Who needs their stupid college T-shirts, fake books, and boring office furniture?

More Self Reliance: Every time Linden Lab has restricted content in some manner, the educational and business clients of LL got blamed by the hosts of deviants who wank their lives away looking at pixelporn in SL. Business is gone. Now we eggheads are leaving, too!
When the Lab next screws over adult-content providers, they’ll have to blame themselves.

Educators spent most of their time generating noobs for LL by using it in class and talking about it at drunken orgies… ahem… I mean… at conferences… serious business conferences, that’s what I meant.
Anyway, with educators gone LL won’t have any way to get more noobs. It’s not like they have any marketing scheme in place to get people to sign up for SL. Their volunteers program is closed, so who is going to encourage noobs to stay in world long enough to learn how it works before they decide to log out forever? Nobody!
Won’t it be great to not have to put up with questions like “where is teh sex?”, and “how do I get this box off my head”, and “what is a techno-communist and why did that cat lady say I am one?”

Out of curiousity .. are there any of the OpenSims that are viable at this time? I’ve visited some of them and found a vast wasteland, empty of avatars.
What I mean is an OpenSim with at least a little traffic other than the creators and with an inworld currency (including the ability to buy and sell it , plus convert it back to US Dollars).
If I knew of a place like SL where I could open a shop, DJ for tips, host at a club or whatever to make some $$$ that can be converted to RL money, I’d jump at the chance….. if for no other reason than to be ready in case SL fails and closes down.

Just like Second Life except you do not pay top dollar for the bugs in Inworldz like you do in Second Life.
At least at Inworldz the bugs are being fixed , unlike the pages upon pages( that are many years old) in the Second Life jira that have not been fixed.
Some how the phrase ” you get what you paid for ” doesn’t apply to Second Life when there are many cheaper choices to choose from.

Well Honestly if Linden Lab wants to survive I think all Tiers should be one Price $100-$200 at most per month + $300 purchase. Its simple would draw a lot of new customers who don’t have to pay big prices.

Actually, they didn’t come for the eggheads first. They came for the casino owners first, then the bankers, then the adfarmers, then the openspace (homestead) owners. You eggheads were warned that it was only a matter of time before they came for you.
First they banninated Woodbury University, now they are sticking it to the rest of you. But no, you all said, LL would never hurt you, LL was full of academics and intellectuals and you were “their kind of people”. You said SL was “made for academics”. Good to hear that LL has finally given up pretending that SL is something that should interest anyone with a 3-digit IQ. Hard to care really, SL is past its sell-by date and has been for some time. One can only wonder just how long this protracted simicide will go on before this tedious circus freak of a metaverse finally expires. I give it 12 months, tops.

Miss J and Yep, thanks for the comments about Inworldz ….. I just checked it out .. they do have the ability to buy and sell their currency and to transfer it to US Dollars (PayPal) .. that’s a big step as far as I’m concerned.
At the moment, there are about 230 avatars on line …. not great, but it’s a start, I guess. And, they do have some clubs with events advertised, so it looks like there is at least SOME nightlife.

Linden lives in a cuckoo world where they are completely oblivious of the virtual world they host.
Soon or later someone will wake up and drag Linden before a court because teenagers enter a world were there is an abundance of peculiar adult behavior, which spills over to mature and pg sims. Imagine mom walking in. She glances at the screen of her dearly beloved daughter and sees how a mistress drags a slave about.

SL is an interesting social experiment because it is a totalitarian free market system.
A friend remarked that SL lacks a proper government. I would say sl lacks the proper protection of the law.
SL is totalitarian state because there is virtual no law to protect you and what law there is isn’t uphold because Linden doesn’t bother with law and order.
Sim owners can do whatever they want and nobody can stop them. They don’t like your face? You’re banned. You disturbed them in their sleep? You’re banned. You appear to be someone they don’t like? You’re banned.
In the end it is all about the money. You pay then you are the boss. You don’t pay: to bad.
It is interesting to see what the world would become if companies would run it. In fact it might be a tad better than sl, for sl doesn’t give a toss about their customers.
The next group Linden is going to tackle are the artists.
