Persephone Bolero — Post 6 Grrrrl

by Alphaville Herald on 18/12/10 at 11:45 pm

[Contrary to popular belief, I do read the comments from time to time. So when I saw in them one week that Persephone Bolero had left a comment that indicated she would be willing to pose, I hoped I would hear from her. I did, and I have to say that working with her was a treat. It is a pleasure to introduce the witty and beautiful Persephone Bolero, Post 6 Grrrl ~Timothy Morpork]

Persephone Bolero Final 1

I was a businessperson since my very first store opened in early 2007. Enticed into the world of low-risk virtual business ventures, I plunged head-first into SL for fun and profit. It was usually the former and rarely the latter.

My first business was an orientation service to help newbies learn their way around. This was the early days when Anshe Chung graced the cover of Business Week, and new people were gushing into SL quicker than Linden Labs could get the ads up.

We were all pretty naive in those days. There was a serious flaw in my business plan, of course. Noobs had no money, and by the time they did, they didn’t need my services. After two months, I discovered escorts made more money than me and closed my business that day. I tried escorting, but it turns out you have to be nice to assholes, which isn’t one of my strengths. I lasted less than a week.

A few months later, I opened a roleplay sim based on a fictional feudalistic society of my own creation. It was a medieval, non-Gorean fantasy world called Bondomia. Our first advertising slogan was “Make Love, Not Gor.” I started out with a 4096 parcel on the mainland, and it would grow to be two full private regions and three open space regions at its peak.

I had tried to make Bondomia a space where the roleplay was a means toward creative expression through acting and fiction. But most people just want to play heroic characters in an escapist fantasy, where they whack each other with swords all day. There’s nothing wrong with that, but my vision differed from most people’s interests.

And worst of all, too much of my time was spent mitigating and containing drama. After two years, I quietly sold off all but the original region and converted it into a beautiful residential neighborhood, where I now live with my friends. Though, to this day I still get IMs from people telling me how much they miss Bondomia, which is sort of my consolation prize.

While Bondomia was running, I used to build log cabins as a way to clear my mind. I started selling these cabins for another revenue stream to support the sim, and when Bondomia closed, I put my full attention into my store. It turned out to be my most lucrative and drama-free venture I’ve done. And having all that money, I did what anyone in SL would do. I blew it all on sploders and sex beds.

Toward the end of 2009, sales started to take a dive, which seems to be the case for many content creators. I opened up a rustic, sculpted, log furniture line in hopes of generating more revenues, but sales did not return to their early 2009 levels. Now, the store barely breaks even, and I am no longer creating new content.

For the time being, I’ve retired from the world of virtual business and content creation. I spend most of my time dancing at the live shows of the many wonderful musicians around the grid, while I devise new and clever ways to advance my right-wing agenda, which of course is entirely motivated by a desire to make poor people miserable while polluting the planet, as any of you who have read my comments here know.

Oh, and here’s some naked pictures of me.

Persephone Bolero Final 3

To recap: There’s no profit in noobs unless you have sex with them. Roleplay is all about drama and sword whacking. Poor people smell bad. And live music is the last thing to do in SL that doesn’t involve shopping or sex.

Being serious though, a lot of what you’re saying here is repeating a conversation I was having yesterday with someone in EVE Online who was also involved in SL from the early days. Sadly the “make money in SL” bubble has long ago burst and opportunities even to make microprofits are diminishing. I’m not entirely convinced that’s a bad thing though, maybe it will stop people looking to simply take from SL instead of thinking what they can contribute?

I actually found this Post 6 interesting. Strange.

I’d agree, Senban — an interesting read.

Even sex-hating feminazis enjoy an articulate Post 6 now and again.

    Yes. Beuatiful Post 6! Finally.
And the team of photog/model didn’t even go for full frontal nekkidity. Paired with a write-up entertaining and clever enough I didn’t even bother to look at the pics in the first place.

    Well done, both of you.
